Re: Think India is only taking phone jobs?
I think this is great.
It costs nearly nothing for a team to try this and there is only potential upside. If they fall flat on their face, it does nothing to the future of the franchise.
But imagine if at least one of these kids can figure it out?
The Pirates are potentially opening up a new market of players."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I wonder, due to religious reasons if any of these players wear turbans with their baseball caps/helmets?Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Think India is only taking phone jobs?
Seriously, anyone that is knocking the Pirates for this... doesn't know anything about doing 'good business'.
If this works, they've opened up a MASSIVE revenue stream for MLB to tap into. India first, China second.
Also, these kids are young with lively arms.
No lose situation for the Pirates whatsoever.http://flotn.blogspot.com

Really ??
These two guys haven't picked up a baseball until earlier this year. Also, they were on a reality show ($1 mil prize to the winner) and neither came close to winning the show..
And the best part? "When they first came to the United States and began playing catch, the pitchers were mystified by the concept of gloves and had to taught not to try to catch the ball with their bare hands". (from Fox Sports).
I could understand if they took the top two winners - and also like the scouting globally concept. But this has the makings of FAIL written all over it.Comment

Re: Think India is only taking phone jobs?
Considering the fact that cricket balls are probably as hard, if not harder then baseballs it's not that funny. I've watched some cricket and those guys wear these things that aren't much bigger then regular gloves that you'd wear in winter to catch those balls. Most cricketeers prefer to play barehanded.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Are there not enough good young arms here in the good 'ol US of A for us to tap into?
I just don't like the concept of it if it's for reasons other than truly trying to acquire talent.

Seriously, I understand your reasoning, but the Pirates organization isn't in a good position right now to take long shots. Fan attendance is at an all time low. The organization has traded away it's most popular players (minus Jack Wilson who will be traded this offseason). Fans are screaming for change and the Pirates deliver 2 guys who only picked up a baseball a few months ago? It might be a no lose situation because no one expects anything from these 2 guys, but it's also a no win situation with the fanbase who support this organization.Comment

Re: Think India is only taking phone jobs?
How is this any different than drafting a random kid out of HS.
At least these guys are topping out near 90.
They are raw... but the Pirates coaches get to mold them however they want.
They have NO bad habits. They have a fresh slate with these guys and they have great arms... I really don't see the downside to this.
There would be no uproar whatsoever if these two kids were from Kentucky or some other state...
It's two MINOR LEAGUE contracts. I'm sure the Pirates won't be losing sleep over the cost.http://flotn.blogspot.com
