Editing team.dat file? (long)

Has anyone tried making changes to the team.dat file? Seeing as there is alot of gameplay related variables in there it makes me wonder how much of a difference it makes. For those of you that haven't taken a peek inside of that file here's an example of what is in there.

*All of these have an associated value of 0, 1, or 2 - it appears that 0 is low (less likely) and 2 is high (more likely)*

team_homeintensity - related to the crowd noise? teams like the Yankess and Cubs are a 2, while the Devil Rays and Marlins are a 0

team_pinchhitter - difficult to change and notice in game, maybe try using national league teams to see if they'll not pinch hit for the pitcher early in the game.

team_pinchrunner - another one tough to notice, not common anyway unless it's really close late in the game.

team_pitchersub - does it have an impact on how long the pitchers will stay in the game or if a righty reliever gets yanked for another righty reliever? 9 teams have a rating of 0, 12 have a 1, and 11 have a 2. I'm going to try changing them all to 0 to see if it makes any difference.

team_defensivesub - some teams do this, some don't, probably depends more on who is on the bench rather than this rating anyway. Will try changing a team's lineup and put a cruddy fielder in the game a put a good fielder on the bench and see what happens.

team_defensivealign - most of the time I don't pay attention to what the cpu is doing defensively, what this does for the cpu I don't know.

team_takepitch - interesting one, maybe something to do with the first pitch, or maybe something to do with all pitches in general, setting this lower the teams take less pitches?

team_pickoff - I messed with this one a little bit, from what I could tell when I changed it to 0 a pitcher would not attempt more than one pickoff at a time (hopefully I'm not the only one where the pitcher would do it 2 times back to back all the time)

team_int_walks - I happen to like intentional walks, mainly because I can't get walks on my own and also because the AI generally picks proper times to use them. I may try upping this one to 2 for all teams.

team_hitandrun - I can't tell when they are trying a hit and run or when it is just plain a steal, cpu rarely swings at a pitch when they are running. I might up this one just for kicks.

team_steals - I'm assuming that if the batter does not swing at the pitch that it is just a plain old steal attempt, I don't like the computer stealing because they get caught 95% of the time, even the fast ones (nailed Ichiro 4 times in a series)

team_advancebases - agressive baserunners? I wonder if it effects the baserunners of a human controlled team also? Maybe make your baserunners more agressive when you aren't telling them what to do.

team_suicidesqueeze - never seen attempted, anybody?

team_buntforhit - don't think I've ever seen this either, never seen a bunt attempt with the bases empty, or with 2 outs, always in a sacrifice situation. Maybe it has to do with bunting down the lines rather than just dropping it in front of homeplate.

team_sacbunt - they do it all the time already.

There is also a team_vs_XXX - where X is a team abbreviation, what this would be used for I have no clue, each team has a rating vs every team in the league (most are just 0) and there appears to be no correlation at all between different teams. Maybe it has something to do with game impact, or trade between teams, or who the %$#@ knows!? I don't.

I feel sorry for any of you that read through this, I proofread as well as I could. I'm gunna mess with everything for all the teams, bound to notice something different.

Any and all input greatly appreciated.

Scott,

Thanks a lot for posting that. We need people to explore and discect this game so we can figure out how to make it a little better. I am really interested in what you find out about the pitchersub one. Let me know if it makes the pitchers stay in the game longer.

Thanks!

Here's a little of the good and bad that I've noticed.

I played two games against the Royals (picked them because they normally like to run and I've played them numerous times during my season). First game was with all of the variables at 2 with the exception of team_steal which was at 0. The second game I set them exactly opposite, everything at 0 except for steal at 2. I kept the score of each game roughly the same.

They made virtually the same pinch hitting moves in both games. I had changed their lineup, guess they didn't like the stiffs that I put in there.

During game 1 there was one situation where I was certain they would pinch run but didn't do it. The slowest guy on their team singled with 1 out in the 8th when they were down by a run.

team_pickoff - seems to have a noticable effect. During the first game there weren't alot of pickoffs, the starter had zero pickoff attempts. I gave them tons of opportunities, I took a max lead with everybody that got on base regardless of who it was or what base it was. Only once did the pitcher attempt pickoffs back-to-back.

During the second game a pickoff was attempted for nearly every runner at every base, many of them there were two attempts. Both the starter and relievers did this throughout the game.

team_steal - First game there was only one steal attempt and I was intentionally putting their basestealers on and throwing alot of extra pitches. Second game they were off and running, same guys getting put on base, same throwing of waste pitches, 5 steals were attempted.

Here's the bad, pitcher substitution. The point of the games where the starter got yanked was eerily similar.

First game - Gets yanked with 1 out in the 5th after giving up a single and then a run scoring double.
His line for the game: 5.1 IP 8 H 4 ER

Second game - Gets yanked with 0 outs in the 5th after giving up a leadoff single.
His line for the game: 5.0 IP 8 H 4 ER

So, the instant he allowed that 8th hit in both games he got pulled. That ruined my morning. I was really hoping for something other than identical pitching lines.

That's all I got out of these games, didn't pay too much attention to anything else. I wasn't even listening to the crowd in the 9th during a 1 run game. I already hate play testing, doesn't EA use something called beta testers?? Those funny people that sit in front of computers and play games in their spare time and tell the company what works and what doesn't so that it can be fixed and/or tweaked? Guess not.

Maybe this would work a little better if there were corresponding changes to the individual players...making the pitchers stamina higher. Dinjn here put out an edited player file and it does seem to keep the pitchers in perhaps an inning longer. Try your changes in conjunction with that file. I think he also upped the speed ratings for players so stolen bases might be more possible. He lowered catcher's throwing as well I think.

In other words, try your changes along with his at the same time. Might be the right direction.

Good work...keep tinkering!
