Pie for Olson and minor leaguer

Jones, Pie and Markakis in the OF. I think I'll be watching the O's a bit more this season.

    From rotoworld.com:

Orioles acquired outfielder Felix Pie from the Cubs in exchange for LHP Garrett Olson and RHP Henry Williamson.

The Cubs had their backs against the wall with Pie out of options, but it's hard to believe this is the best they could do. Though Pie is a .223/.284/.331 hitter in 260 major league at-bats, his physical ability and minor league track record suggest he will reward a team with patience. While Pie is a true center fielder, early indications suggest he will take over left field with Luke Scott moving to DH. The O's now have a dynamic young defensive outfield with Pie and Nick Markakis book-ending Adam Jones.

Arguably one of the best defensive outfields in baseball. Jones, Pie, and Markakis have enough range to cover two of Camden Yards at the same time. It'll be interesting to see if Pie can develop his bat a bit more, because if he can, he'll be the next great O's leadoff man after Roberts is gone.

I was never high on Olson and didn't get why anyone else was. Good MiL numbers, sure, but he looked pitiful in Baltimore, not to mention he can barely crack 90 MPH.

The Cubs have had a pitiful off season. Truly embarrassing.

This is the greatest title for a thread ever.

What happened to Pie anyway? He was supposed to be a superstar coming through the ranks, did he just fizzle?

The same thing that's happened to every Cubs position prospect. It's completely backwards for Chicago. The projected backups - Theriot, Soto, etc - shine in the starting lineup, while top prospects fade away.

Pie will probably end up exactly like Corey Patterson.

He's only 23, so he still has plenty of time to develop.

I don't get why everyone is high on Pie. I don't get what the Padres see in Olsen because I believe this is the precurser to the Peavy trade.

Re: Pie for Olson and minor leaguer

It has to be his minor league numbers, because he has a 6.87 career ERA in Baltimore through 165 innings. His MiL numbers, on the other hand, are very good.

                2005
                Aberdeen (Short A): 40 IP, 22 H, 1 HR, 20 BB, 59 K, 1.57 ERA
                Frederick (High A): 14.1 IP, 10 H, 0 HR, 7 BB, 19 K, 3.14 ERA

                2006
                Frederick (High A): 81 IP, 81 H, 7 HR, 19 BB, 77 K, 2.78 ERA
                Bowie (AA): 84 IP, 78 H, 5 HR, 31 BB, 85 K, 3.43 ERA

                2007
                Norfolk (AAA): 128 IP, 95 H, 13 HR, 39 BB, 120 K, 3.16 ERA

                2008
                Norfolk (AAA): 36.1 IP, 35 H, 1 HR, 16 BB, 39 K, 2.97 ERA

Then his control went to **** and he proceeded to suck in Baltimore.

This has to be all for Peavy. Hendry doesn't make awful trades like he has been for no reason.

                  Then again.....this is the Cubs.

Re: Pie for Olson and minor leaguer

i still held out hope for Pie, and hope that he gets the playing time he needs...he has nearly a .300 average in the minors, but never got any consistent time against major league pitching.

he has to learn how to strikeout less, and that seems hard for someone to learn to do, especially if they have to learn in the bigs...

the cubs are the cubs...i have paid close attention for years and can't figure it out.

Its a good defensive outfield, but one without much pop. I don't know where Baltimore is going to get any power in that lineup.

I don't see a lot of their games if any because they have been so bad the last few years but Aubrey Huff doesn't hit as many homeruns now as he did with the Rays right?

Markakis will likely blast 20+ homers, and Pie isn't without power.

Baltimore is shaping up to be a competitive team, though that's completely relative for the division their in. They could contend in most divisions, but unfortunately they're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Huff hit 34 last year IIRC.

As for the power in the outfield, Markakis has 30 HR potential, and I expect Jones to hit 15-18 next year with the potential of being a 25 HR per year guy. Pie looks like he has some decent pop too, so it won't be that bad.

I know about Markakis. He's a beast. They did a good job getting him locked up. But they are quickly on there way to becoming the Rangers. They can hit but can't pitch. Rangers have proven you can't win without good starting pitching.
