Turn the pitch speed up to very fast. That will help with the floaty ball. I can't really recommend sliders until I know if you are killing the cpu or getting killed. The better you get, the more you push up the sliders, especially pitching. Don't turn up stealing, maybe even turn it down 5 or 10. Also try the different batting views (High, Medium, Low). I wish there were more batting views.
As far as the looks of the game, some of the batting stances are crazy with broken wrists and broken necks at bat, and some are really good (Joe Morgan), if a little exaggerated.
