when you sign a guy, that amount of money is the total amount over that period of time, not per year, correct?

No, usually it is per year. Let's say you sign Jeff Bagwell for 4 years at 80 BP. That is 80 BP each year you must pay Bagwell for 4 years. So that is a total of 320 BP over 4 years.Favorite Sports Teams
