    Dusty Baker (and other assorted morons)



    If it's not obvious by this thread and my signature, Dusty Baker may be my least favorite person in baseball despite never being affiliated with either of my teams. That's just how dumb the guy is.

    I guess this thread can be used to rip on anti-intellectuals in the game who refuse to open up their mind to new ideas and strategies. People like Baker and Brian Sabean come to mind right off the bat, but this isn't just for people who have jobs with a team. There are incredibly ignorant and illogical writers and analysts out there. Joe Morgan, Jon Heyman and Bill Plaschke really stand out but there are several others.

    Bring out your best quotes of ignorance of those in the media and the game. These guys, and many others I forgot to mention, make fools of themselves far too often and nobody ever calls them out on it. This is our chance to have fun at the expense of the stupidity of others.

    Think of this as our personal FJM for the upcoming season.

    I'll leave you with a quote from Mary Carillo, this is from a talk radio show at like 3 am during last summer.

    "Anyone will tell you how hard it is to come back from behind, but coming back from ahead can sometimes be even trickier."

    If you can explain how that makes any sense at all, please, let me know.

      I'll never forget the time he called on Dunn to bunt, and when he failed he later stroked like a 450 foot shot into right field to show him up.

      I mean I met the guy and all and he is, well... he's not pure class, but he's not a bad person or anything. But eh, he was much more likable here in San Francisco than Felipe Alou, even though his relievers killed anything Bonds and Kent did for him.

      I think he grew impatient because of the treatment Bonds got, personally. He found that the walks didn't end up getting the production he had hoped for, and thinks he's learned from that mistake. Plus, in Cincinnati, anything is possible (though bunts can't fly over the fence, tsk tsk).

      Funny chart, BTW.


      EDIT: As for the quote, he definitely worded it wrong, but I get his intent. He means it's tougher to be behind and play aggressively than be ahead and coast, sandbag, and be overly optimistic that the game is in your hands. Don't be going station-to-station, don't leave fat pitches over the plate, focus on hitting your cut-off, etc. Sometimes you lose that train of thought when you're ahead.

      On that same token, I don't see us getting all gung-ho over what Yogi Berra used to say. In fact, we actually aspire to hear his hilarious quotes.

              Anybody remember Joe Morgan last year in June saying the White Sox had the best bullpen he's ever seen?

                  That quote is from an analyst/commentator named Mary Carillo, not Dusty Baker. It still doesn't make a lick of sense either way.

                      Yep, I laughed my *** off and not because I was hatin on the Sox, just because the sheer stupidity of that comment...if I'm not mistaken that was against the Cubs.

                          It's looking like you might need my signature very soon. Talk like this and you'll end up in the dog pound here in OS Baseball. Not many here want to hear about advanced statistics.

                          Seriously, though, a lot of my aggravation comes from listening to Joe Morgan. I intentionally avoid hearing him speak so I don't know any idiotic things he's said in the past couple years, but I'm sure there are many.

                          My biggest gripe is when a guy like Morgan will talk and talk about what they know (mostly because they used to be players and apparently, playing the game well also means you can manage the game well - Michael Jordan is still trying to figure this out) and then when he's wrong, he either won't admit to his mistake or he'll find a way to cover his tracks.

                          Listen to Morgan and I guarantee he'll say "What I'm saying is..." It's his go-to-phrase when he's been owned. Usually that phrase will also include, "I played the game. I know" or something similar.

                          Just the other day I had to listen to two morons discussing the World Baseball Classic and here's what one had to say:

                          "It's simply amazing the relationship these guys have. Rollins even said that he's beginning to like David Wright. The telling sign was when Jeter sat between the two. They joke around about who's going to win the NL East and they also joke with Jeter, Pedroia, and Youkilis about the AL East."

                          What he meant:

                          "This team is full of egotistical stars. Jeter could never get along with a Red Sox. What would their fan base think? Wright and Rollins. Together? Couldn't happen. Impossible. The Phillies and Mets have one of the biggest rivalries in the game. Team USA will never get along."

                          I really couldn't understand what this guy was blabbering about during the telecast. Why is it so surprising to see Jeter and Pedroia having a friendly discussion? Why couldn't Rollins and Wright be friends? The media wants to hype up these rivalries to make fans hyped up, and then they act like the players aren't human beings with friendly agendas. This isn't Pete Rose banging into a catcher anymore. Baseball players don't care about these things. Let's move on from this belief that players are supposed to hate each other. Joe Torre and Francona routinely talked about having conversations on the phone. Why should this be surprising?

                                      FJM should have it's own section in the Hall of Fame.

                                          Hey, if they're putting Bill Maezorski in based on one at-bat, why not? Also, you really need to get on AIM if you have the thing. I figure you, myself and Sandman42 can work on some pretty humorous stuff for this thread.

                                                  Well, considering I personally know the guy, I can't say much good about his personality, or his son (which I pain to call him my "friend" the way he acts like he's such hot ****). But he hasn't done much to help San Francisco in general. You've seen Benitez, Hillenbrand left within half a year, he let Magowan walk all over him to get rid of Bonds, $ito's contract, and then trading away Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano, kept Feliz, Roberts, and Torrealba for way too long... and our young players with "good potential" were busts very early (Damon Minor, Felipe Crespo, Cody Ransom, Yamid Haad, Jesse Foppert, Edwards Guzman...).

                                                  And let's not forget the terrible starters we decided to sign through the years: Sidney Ponson, Jamie Wright, Damian Moss, Jeff Fassero (he used to be good... in the 90s), Matt Morris, And why the hell did we get of Jerome Williams and Livan Hernandez when we did?!

                                                  I guess I have to blame the fact that we have Mark Gardener as our bullpen pitching coach. He's a career 4.5-some ERA and I never liked the guy as our third string starter back in the 90s. Terrible pitcher IMO (and apparently not much of a bullpen pitching coach, either).

                                                  I said it recently in another thread and I'll say it again... the most recent good "on paper" trade that he has made that was successful was the trade that got us Jason Schmidt and John Vander Wal. Randy Winn's was good for getting rid of Foppert and Torrealba, but aside from filling in for Bonds for the last half of that year and sparking a bit, he hasn't been the thing to come to SF since Schmidt.

                                                  Sabean just hasn't been what he needs to be. I wish I could call him out on it, but we won't get any more holiday grams from their family if I do.

                                                      Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser for AJ Pierzynski. AJ spent one year in San Fran while Nathan became one of the premire closers in the game, Liriano has out of this world talent but injury issues and Bonser is a decent back of the rotation starter.

                                                      Gave one of the worst contracts in baseball history to Barry Zito, 7 years, 126 million dollars. In two years his ERA+ has yet to suprass league average with 98 in 2007 and 85 in 2008. His WHIP was an atrocious 1.60 last year. His SO-to-BB ratio last year was a laughable 1.18. The man clearly has nothing in the tank and they've still got over 100 million dollars to pay him.

                                                      Rumor has it he was shopping Matt Cain last year, too.

                                                      That's why I hate Brian Sabean. The fact incompetence on that level can be tolerated without losing his job is astounding.
