Chipper Rips WBC, Toronto -- What a jerk!

    From the Toronto Star:

Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones isn't too enamoured with the World Baseball Classic – or Toronto.

The third baseman, who left the U.S. team this week due to injury, blasted both the format of the tournament and the city that hosted his team earlier this month for the opening round.

"Just way too many days off," Jones told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the event's format. "We stayed in Toronto for a week and played three games. I don't know if you ever stayed in Toronto, but it's not exactly Las Vegas. To say that we were plucking our eyebrows out one at a time would be an understatement.

“You’re not getting the work in that you should. You’re getting reps, but you’re not getting the at-bats that you need.

“Getting to share a clubhouse with the guys and getting to know people on a different level is the cool part about it. But when you’re talking about a three-week tournament, and you could literally play eight games in three weeks, it’s just too much down time for spring training.”

Jones added he won't play for Team USA again unless the format is changed.

"It isn't exactly Las Vegas" what the hell is that supposed to mean, we don't have as many casinos ok, no flashing lights on every street, fine... but how the hell do you get bored out of your mind in Toronto for 13 days?!

First off, he's not a jerk and I believe his statements are valid. Aside from the comment about the city of Toronto, it is kindly messed up with all of the days off in between games b/c it messes up the players' rhythm, especially when they're trying to get back into the grove again with over 3-4 months off. Usually for MLB games, a team is in a visiting city for only 3-4 days (playing at least 2 games) and gone to another city afterwards but Chipper was stating they're playing only 3 games in the span of like a week and a half or something so there's a lot of downtime. Of course, the WBC was created by Selig so the days off (i.e. World Series) isn't that surprising.

Yea, he's right about the preparation. Spring training games are every day. Jones is getting one weeks worth of at-bats in three weeks because of the WBC.

His comments about Toronto aside, he's pointing out a flaw in the format.

MLB needs these kind of comments, though. It's the only way they can continue to improve the WBC so that it can become a well-respected tournament. Anger, frustration, and disappointment are what led to the changing of the format to a two-loss elimination system - which has been for the better.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

The comments about Toronto are low (and wrong from what I've heard about Toronto) but it ties into the other thread here. American players are focused on getting ready for the MLB season. The WBC is looked at as an alternative to spring training. It just doesn't work as it currently is. I don't know if there's a way it can ever really work but we'll see if they make some tweaks to help... if not, it won't be around for much longer or the US team will look more like the US Olympic team.

If I posted it...There was a need. Is he posting here? Did I hurt Chippers feelings? No, my point stands and its legit!

He's right about the prep work and such for the WBC so that I have no problem with but he nearly makes his comments worthless to me by giving such a low blow to the city of Toronto. Mind you, it was extremely cold at that time so it wasn't exactly paradise but even in cold conditions Toronto is a fun and great place to hang out in. All he had to do was put on a coat and go out. Is that going to kill him? Probably so, since he's a southerner but still....

Toronto is one of the most player friendly cities around if you give it a chance.

I read some lady's column from this very same newspaper criticizing Chipper but I believe his comments were misconstrued. I've never been to Toronto (or even above the Mason-Dixon line for that matter) but I've also heard it's a fabulous place and is definately better than the pothole that is Atlanta (and the 1-hour wait traffic line just to even enter the city)...Regardless, I think it was more frustration b/c the players can't train and due to the extreme layoff between games.

I really don't think that's meant to be a knock to T.O. in any way... seems more like an offhand comment that stemmed from the fact that he's frustrated at the tournament format.

So i guess it is safe to say that Chipper probably won't finish his career in a Blue Jay uniform.

I thought it was pretty funny that Jones said that if changes are not made to the World Classic...he's not gonna be there next time.

What a huge lost for USA in 2013.

Losing there 41 year old third baseman.
