    Tweaking the data files

    Hey all,

I have been messing with the data files to bring the gameplay up a notch and so far I think it has helped. The first thing I did was reduce the catcher throwing and accuracy ratings down by 10 each. This makes it possible to steal a base...although it is still hard. Then I reduced the fielding and throwing of all the 2B and SS by 10 each. Now they make some errors and they don't make those snags in the outfield nearly as much. In fact you really don't see those except from players like Nomar who you would expect to have the ability to do such things. Erros are still rare, but you now need to be careful when powering up your 2B or SS to make a throw to first.
Next I started messing with the starting pitchers. I bumped their stamina up by 20 and then increased the velocity of their fastballs and sliders by at least 10. I then increased the movement of the pitches by 5-10 points depending on the pitch type. I bumped the slider up by 10. This has not made much of a change on CPU hitting, but it makes human hitting really hard. Thus CPU pitchers stay in longer because I get less hits.

I have not finished updating all of the starting pitchers but should be done this week. Any other ideas on things I should tinker with?

    Thanks

    Thanks this is great info.

What editor are you using? I got the game this weekend and I haven't downloaded an editor yet.

I did this like three weeks ago and posted it on the board. I did extensive research and posted it on the board. I then posted updated rosters with the changes you are mentioning...

            Been there...done all of that...

Yes you did (I know I used it for a while), but you did not adjust the 2B and SS ratings and you only adjusted the stamina of the pitchers. So it is a little more than what you did and thus provides more noticable changes to the way the game plays out.

Trust me it is much harder to hit a star pitcher now. Clemons pitched a two hitter against me recentley.

Your kidding right? I adjusted all catchers to an arm strength and throwing rate of 41-50. I upped a lot of players' speed ratings a bunch as well.

Keep in mind the following when you edit the fielding ratings:

                    1. Will it give simmed players 50 errors a year?
                    2. Isnt there enough hits in MVP anyway? Why make it easier?
                    3. How is it harder to hit Clemens if you made fielding worse? Through stamina??

No, I'm not kidding. Man you have it out for me today! Clemons is harder for me to hit because I increased the movement and speed of his pitches. By doing that I am reducing the number of hits I get. The CPU still gets its share of hits, but as I learn how to better pitch those numbers are going down.

I agree though about not adjusting things so much that your simmed stats are crazy. I am sure your catcher ratings of 41-50 are not causing stolen base stats to go through the roof.

The point of my post was to get ideas/suggestions from people of ways to play with the data. I know I am not going to all of the sudden make this a true sim of baseball. Just having some fun.
