    Using Excel as editor?

Can anyone post step by step instructions on how to use Excel to make mass changes to player ratings? What do you have to watch out for? What gets corrupted or changed while saving? I don't think any of the released 3rd part editors are going to incorporate global changes...

    Thanks!

I second that...considering global changes are mainly what I am doing now.

Well, I was messing around with this today ironically. I am not an Excel expert so I couldn't figure out how to add percentages to the values (formula applied to more than one cell). I wanted to up everyones' power 15-20% among other changes like catchers and fielders range. I got it so I had the columns separated but the real trouble was when i went to save. I don't know how to save it. If I save it the same way I was working on it, it will be screwed up for sure.

Here is a suggestion. I know some people have had sucess editing globally, is there any way to make the excel file available for download and then we can just apply the exhisting formulas for the attributes we want. I think I can make this game play the way I want to if I can just edit some files easily.

Are there any simple database programs out there that might come in handy for this type of thing? My MS Orface didn't come with Access.

I've been using Excel and Access to do different things. Both have quirks when working with the files. If you're really interested I'll put a small step-by-step thing together for Excel. Here's a sample of the trouble you have to do through.

                1. Rename your .dat file to .txt
                2. Open excel and then open the .txt file
                - the text import wizard should start, if it doesn't the converter probably wasn't installed with excel
                3. You have to use comma as the delimiter
                4. Make sure that the first column is setup to use "text" format, if you leave it on "general" excel will cut zero's off the hex id numbers
                5. Formulas won't work because the column number is placed before the attribute
                6. The data can be sorted, but you have to be able to get everything back in the same order as it started.
                7. When you are done editing save the file as a .csv (very important)
                8. Rename your .csv to .dat

That's just a sample...alot of other things you can do...

MS Access is an entirely different beast to tackle.

                have a good one,

Thanks Snepp. That helps becuase even though we can't do global editing at least we can group the data and edit it.

I should have put this in before, but it slipped my mind...

In order to do sorting in excel you have to be able to get them resorted properly. This is what I've been doing and it works well.

                        1. Create a new column at the left
                        2. Give the first row a value of 1000
                        3. Use the autofill feature to fill them in all the way to the last row (will end up being 1000 through 2100 something).
                        4. When you are done sorting and editing you can now sort by the column that you made and will have everything in the same order you started.
                        5. Delete that column and save your file.

Dumb question...how do you change the file type from .dat to .txt?

I tried rename but that does not allow you to change file type.

                            Thanks!
