What's the best marquee pitch thrown by a pitcher ever?

    Shamelessly stolen from another forum.

I have to say, after reading this: http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/200...nna-cut-you-ev ... it has to be Rivera's cutter. Just read the article first. Very in-depth analysis of how frequent that cutter is used last season, how Mo uses it against lefties vs righties, and most importantly how much that pitch can actually move. I looked at the xyz plot and that seems incredibly insane that he can make it move like that.

And for essentially being a one-pitch pitcher (as Mo throws his cutter almost exclusively), I'm even more impressed.

Thoughts? If you disagree, who else? It could be some washed up pitcher too, as long as he threw a pitch that was for some time thought to be next to unhittable. Ones that come to mind would be Zito's curve (in Oakland days), Gagne's circle change, etc.

Mariano's cutter with miles between him and the #2 guy.

      World Series titles
      Consistency
      Healthy

I think of all the other people Lidge's slider is #2. Everybody knows it's coming but they still can't hit it.

Rivera's cutter. It's the only pitch he's thrown for over a decade and players still can't hit it.

i will throw my vote for Nolan Ryan's heater, too...

it was the first thing that came to mind, and Rivera couldn't use one pitch as a starter....and a good starter will always get the nod from me over a great closer.

Darryl Kile's (Kyle's?) Curve deserves at least a mention, that thing was nasty.

            Satchel Paige's Long Tom

re: the cutter...you watch it and it just doesn't seem to do that much...but he KK/BB ratio is crazy...it is Eckersley-esque.

JR Richard had a slider that hit 93 mph. It was just filthy.

I'll still go w/ Ryans fastball though.

Ryan's fastball comes to mind immediately, not only was it fast but it had some serious movement to it.

                  Other great pitches:

                  - Jack Morris' forkball especially in his Detroit days. That thing was NAAAASTY!

                  - Mike Scott's split finger fastball although the pitch looked illegal. His splitter had so much life and spin to it that people thought he was scuffing the baseball.

This is a good one too.

IMO it has to be the SPLITTER invented by Bruce Sutter, or the circle change of Johan Santana.

I know that given the Yankee fanhood everyone will just bandwagon jump and say Rivera, but THERE ARE other pitchers out there with much better marquee pitches.
