Re: Gary Sheffield Signs With The Mets!!!
I guess he is so terrible that a certain WS winning NL East team was looking at signing him as well..
I like the signing myself, even if Sheff is a P/T player.. gives another righty bat either in the lineup, or off the benchComment

@ Sherik
get it right....as I said earlier this week...as someone who is both of Latin and African-American decent....Sheff NEVER said he 'hated' Latin players. That's irresponsible and just plain gnorant. What he DID say was he took issue with how some scouts...or scouts in general, take a partenalistic attitude towards many unsigned Latin players....and in many cases....basically use them.
Carlos Guillen was the FIRST to not only defend Sheff's comments, but as someone who is from Venezuela, he said he knows EXACTLY what Sheff was saying first hand.
The quotes, like almost always were taken out of context of the entire question/anser session. Sheff did not make his original statements really clear, but from jump, I and many LAtin people knew exactly what he meant. Unfortunately, that is the business of one aspect of baseball.
It seems hypocritical that I'm willing to overlook a guy's fielding who hits .290 and drives in 100 runs, but I'm harping on the fielding of a .225 hitter whose stats took a dive across the board last season? Ibanez brings other things to the table, including a great attitude. Sheffield, not so much.
Sheffield is a poor clubhouse guy, who hits .225, and who can't field. Oh, and he hates Latin players. Yet he signed with....the Mets. Yeah, this will work out great. For 2017...

@ antifanboy
exactly...
plus Sheff and Manuel poited out that they kept a nice relationship going since they were both on the champion Marlins team
Sheff's gonna respect Manuel, whos a respected black manager.
Fans who say he's gonna disrupt the clubhouse are clueless. All great teams have crazy guys who rock the boat. Look at the 86 Mets. Its a joke everyone expects their players to be choir boys.
Like Omar said today, its low risk, high reward. Sheff's a gamer, something the Mets really lacked the last two seasons.
Excellent signing.For 2017...

LOLOLOL
for a top heavy lefty hitting lineup, some Phillies fans can say what they want, but Cairo AIN'T the answer.....
Sheff said today that it was tough to tell J-Roll that he was going to New York. Because J-Roll was one of the first to contact him...amongst the other players.
Then he said a call and a text message from David Wright made his mind up for him.....

@ WakeUnc2321
LOL
Wake, now you know YOU are alright with me....
Excuse my typos....
I was ticked off and I can't STAND for those who know nothing of what they speak, to put it out there like it's gospel....
Sheesh
It's reported that he signed for $400,000..which is all any team interested would have to pay...Detroit is picking up the bulk of the $14 million. I also heard Detroit is STILL paying Damion Easley too (LMAO)
Again...and I cant emphasize this enough....
ALL players that have been interviewed in the league before Sheff signed with the Mets, have said he is a GREAT teammate, is mostly quiet in the clubhouse and they ALL...
I repeat...A-L-L get along with him. Why do you think D. Wright was the first Met to contact him? Because D. Wright had gotten to know him previously. Jerry Manuel and Sheff won their WS together in Florida. Manuel said he never had a problem with him. Bobby Cox said he was the best---ever....
Prejudices and biases aside...which are IN EFFECT with some. and don't sleep on it........
What happens is MOST believe basically everything they read in the sports section of their newspapers. They BELIEVE all of the innuendo, gossip, UNNAMED SOURCES stuff, etc., that they hear on radio and they see on know-it-all talk shows (like the few we have here in NYC).
Gary, like MANY athletes, does not like most of the media. And last I checked, that's not a crime. Steve Carlton DISLIKED the media, George Hendrick DISLIKED the media, Eddie Murray DISLIKED the media, Dave Kingman DISLIKED the media--all of them for different reasons....
So....
MANY in the media knowing this....slant, misspeak or embellish on stuff that is true and pile-on with their own spin. Folks fall for the bait and speak and act like they know the person....it's a vicious and irresponsible cycle. I don't blame many athletes for giving the media the cold shoulder. And especially in big cities, you can't win. If you're brutally honest (like Sheff), it's "oh my GAWD...why did he say that?" Well silly, you asked him and he didnt lie, right?
And if you give truthful, but homoginized answers like D-Wright or Jeter, then they all complain that you don't say enough, and that you should be more outspoken.
Again, personally...
the ONLY people in the equation that can HONESTLY tell you how he is, are those PLAYING the game. And those IN the game, not on the perimieter...Period....
So to those who got their proverbial axes to grind, KEEP grindin' em, because the show WILL go on!!! Believe it!!!!
LMAOOOOOOOOOO
I knew you'd be here soon. I understand the "risk" and that if he plays even decent, the Mets got their money's worth - I mean he signed for what, $800k or something? He's a RH bat in a lineup full of leftys/SH but my only issue is with the clubhouse factor as well. In an already tense lockeroom from the past 2 seasons and the collapses they've encounted I don't see him allevating that problem if that situation arises again in late August.Last edited by Rod_Carew29; 04-05-2009, 02:18 AM.For 2017...

Re: Gary Sheffield Signs With The Mets!!!
I'm sorry, Carew...had to do it. Naw, the only time I personally really followed him was his time here in Atlanta and he was nearly a choir boy but everywhere else I just hear the media backlashing him and ripping his comments. Player's comments are always taken out of context (like Chipper's at the WBC) and taken apart and dissected (like A-Rod's).
I hope I'm wrong (for your sake's, not the Mets - I want my Bravos to win the division) but personally, at least from the clubhouse side I see this as a possible concern, that's all. Then again, it may be like the Celtics and Marbury where it all fizzles out and there's no probs (at least so far).

@ WakeUnc2321
LMAO @ chill pill
hey, I'm good with it, everything I said was true, so I won't be losing any sleep...
hey nothing is guaranteed, we know that, but what IS guaranteed is that the media at times, needs to be put in their place...
I remember when there was NO internet, NO sportsphone, NO faxes, NO cell phones, NO sportstalk radio, NO satellite radio, NO blogs, NO cable...the ONLY way one got their sports was SOLELY from local news at 6pm or 11pm and in the newspapers...that was it...
but as time has gone on, the sometimes intrusionary nature of the media has gotten wayyyy out of hand....giving some (the listenership or the readership) the idea that THEY know these players....
what a laugh...they know jack

Re: Gary Sheffield Signs With The Mets!!!
Despite having three players drive in 100 runs last season the Mets were terrible offensively, Jose Reyes was the only other Met to drive in 50 runs. Sheffield when healthy can add at least 20-25 HR's and 60+ RBI's and the Mets can certainely use that. If he is willing to be a part time player and show he can still play the field then i would expect to see Sheffield get 350 AB's or more.
This is like the Rangers opting to keep Andruw Jones. If he hits and plays well, great. If not, oh well. It's not like they are the ones paying his $14 million dollar salary.Comment

@ rsox
I agree totally....
he did say at his press conference yesterday that he realizes what point he's in, in his career. He also said WHATEVER the Mets want him to do...in the field, off the bench, whatever....he will do it....
And again, part of the equation is to keep their lineup from being lefty top-heavy, like Philly's...
Anytime he's in the lineup, it'll enable the Mets to lengthen the lineup and break up their lefties also
and i saw the Jones was ok with possibly filling a similar role

Last I checked, our lefty top-heavy batting won us back-to-back division titles and a World Series. Not getting Sheff as a bit player isn't hurting us any.
Sheff went for much more playing time. Nothing wrong with that. I just don't buy into the whole "he wants to win" stuff. Nah. Not buying it at all.Last edited by P2K; 04-05-2009, 03:00 AM.Comment

@ P2K
your top heavy team from last year...definitely against righties, was most of the time:
Rollins, Utley, Burrell, Howard, Victorino and Werth
so...what will it be tonight?
Rollins, Utley, Werth, Howard, Victorino and Ibanez...in that order? What do you know about it?
the other stuff you mentioned is fair....
I said "all this fuss". You didn't see a thread dedicated to Cairo signing with the Phillies or sports radio talking about Cairo possibly signing here.
