Why is ESPN so concerned about CC?

I mean, he sucked last year in the AL, why wouldn't he suck again this year in the AL?

(6-8 for Cle, 3.83 ERA which isn't bad)

That is why I hate ESPN. If it ain't the Yankees or Red Sox, then it ain't important.

espn is the flagship station for yanks/sox. Do me a favor and for the entire season go to espn.com and read the headlines in the box to your right. Count the amount of times the word Yanks and Sox do not appear in the headlines.

You answered your own question, because he is a Yankee. He signed a Huge contract so good or bad he is going to be looked at after every start

So he sucked cause he went 6-8? Wins and losses are the most worthless stat for starting pitchers.

That's true but for the most part he was getting lit up. Now, I know ESPN is Yankee/Red Sox central but there is some credence to this "worrying" as he did have an amazing rest of the season with the Brewers last year.

Then again, most people who follow baseball and aren't biased could tell you that this might happen with CC however, it's only one start but it could be the start of a trend.

I meant the ERA wasn't that bad, but come on, the guy was mediocre at best in the AL. He went to the National League and dominated. He comes back to the AL, he will again be mediocre again.

So lets just forget his 2007 Cy Young that he won in the AL?

Was he mediocre then as well?

Re: Why is ESPN so concerned about CC?

On one hand, this is crazy. It was one freaking start. I loved every second of it but it was only one start. An era of under 4 is far from sucking, especially in the AL, and he did win the CY Young just a year before that. All of that should be considered (along with what he did with the Brewers) more than the first start of the season.

On the other hand, he's known as a slow starter and there were questions about whether or not he could handle NY even before they signed him. The reason for those questions centered around the rabid fans and media microscope... so shouldn't be surprised by that media microscope. Both he and Tex are slow starters in a town that doesn't take too kindly to slow starts. We'll see if he can handle it and fight through it. It is a headline when someone is basically called the best pitcher at least in the AL, paid that insane amount of money, supposed to be the force to put the Yankees back in the WS and he gets smacked around by a team expected to finish last in the division. It's silly to read too much into it, but it is news.

If a 3.83 ERA and a Cy Young in 2007 is "mediocre at best," then I don't want to know what you think good is.

CC will be under a microscope because he plays in New York, for the Yankees, and just signed an enormous deal.

He signed the richest contract ever for a pitcher and is playing in the biggest market in the country so his debut was going to be the headline good or bad. I haven't been watching ESPN, so I don't know how much coverage it got, but if you were expecting less you're foolish. How CC (and to a lesser extent, Burnett) pitches is going to be a running story all month.

I think AJ is soooo lucky that the Yankees signed CC too because the media is so focused on chewing out CC.

AJ at times couldn't even handle the media pressure in Toronto. I can't imagine what would happen if he gets shelled this season.
