So far I'm 34 games into my franchise (12-22) with the Cardinals and you won't believe the injuries I've had. First I lose Brett Tomko in his first start for 70 days. So I signed Chuck Finley. Then I lose Eli Marrero for 58 days...not a huge deal since he doesn't start but he is a vital role player. Then it gets ugly. I lose JD Drew for 90 days so I sign Ray Lankford. Then I lose Fernando Vina for 14 days. Last night the kicker...lose Albert Pujols for 64 days and for a moment I had thoughts of just starting over, but changed my mind because half of the fun is seeing what kind of personel manager you are and if you can make it work without your best players.
So in essence, I've lost 4 guys that were hitting over .300, three of them for a long time. Pujols was leading the team in HRs and RBIs and Vina was second in the NL in hits and he was a great leadoff hitter. Four starters have been replaced by what amounts to 4 scrubs. Orlando Palmeiro is a big surprise in right field, hitting over .300 and driving in some runs for me. What really hurts is with all the injuries, I've pretty much broke myself signing free agents and if I lose one more player, I don't know what I will do.
I guess the thing that bothers me is while I do realize that injuries are a part of the game, it's the way I'm getting them that's ticking me off. Like when Pujols got hurt. He was in left field and got hurt on a lazy fly ball to the right fielder! The right fielder caught the ball and the camera pans to Pujols on the ground rolling around with a broken arm! The least they could do is have injuries that are believable...not something that looks like the guy got struck by lightning or something.
