OT: Pitchers should be better hitters

I'm tired of seeing pitchers absolutely suck at hitting, it's quite embarrassing actually. It's one thing that makes the NL so boring to watch. I appreciate the small-ball approach that some teams have to take to manufacture runs, but frankly most pitchers don't seem to do anything else other than be a non-productive out (you'd be surprised how many times they don't move the runner over) and an excuse to bring out another position player, which sometimes becomes wasted as well.

Now I'm not saying they should be like Carlos Zambrano or C.C. Sabathia and actually have some serious major leauge pop, but they have to just be smarter out there. They look at the plate from the other side all the time, they must be able to understand the strike zone or get in the mind of a pitcher and understand what they may throw. They flail their arms at pitches and just look ugly. They have no sense of what the hell they are doing out there.

I understand that "their focus is pitching," but they take BP all of the time. They played baseball in high school. They aren't new to the game, and they still bat three times a start.

I don't really know what needs to change because frankly it's always been like this, but I find it amazing that pitchers are such terrible hitters. If they can all at least look like they may have a clue what they're doing up there, then I would be happier. Otherwise, I'll just continually watch Tim Lincecum strike out looking with three perfect pitches and the tying run on base. Not saying that I expect him to deliver, but to have zero expectation is unfortunate to say the least.

    You should teach them.

There are some decent hitting pitchers out there. Heck, Yovanni Gallardo homered in his first AB this season-off of Randy Johnson no less.

Teams don't teach hitting fundamentals to pitchers anymore. They use the DH in the minor leagues and i noticed in a lot of spring training games this year they used the DH in a lot of NL parks. Personally, i would prefer to see pitchers concentrate on pitching and let the other 8 guys worry about providing the offense but i get what you are saying. It is a sorry sight to see some of these pitchers go to plate, look at 3 pitches, and then sit down.

Daniel Cabrera is the prime example. Terrible athlete when he's not pitching, apparently. Has no coordination.

I think it would be a lot better if they were better hitters, but as someone said, their main goal should be on pitching and getting down the sac bunt. Its always fun to see a good hitting pitcher though (Adam Wainwright for example on the Cards), but they are getting paid to get hitters out. But what I don't understand is why they are so bad since most pitchers didn't just pitch when they played in high school and lower levels of baseball. A lot of them played positions as well, or at least thats what I assumed.

I don't think watching the NL is boring at all. Pitchers batting adds an entire different strategy to the game. Do you pull a pitcher late in the game whose pitching well and in a tie game, or even down or up a run, with a runner on second, or not, etc., etc. I'm totally against the DL, but understand why some people like it, but not for me. Hope the NL never goes that route.

I don't think "boring" was the best term I could have used. I just meant that there should be a low level of expectation when it comes to a game's outcome, much the same an inning, an at-bat, or even a pitch. That's what makes baseball so exciting. But pitchers bring this expectancy level and bring it up to the point where we expect them to make an out. Granted, nobody ever finishes a season above .500, but we don't watch position players come up and expect them to be automatic outs like pitchers.

I like watching pitchers hit. Especially guys like Sabathia who actually have some power. I know that If I was an AL manager and my pitcher was a half decent hitter (say Sabathia) I'd forfeit the DH for his starts.

All the best hitting pitchers should go to the NL.

                    Somehow this is Selig's fault.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not opting for the NL to add the designated hitter, that would be awful. I'm just suggesting that organizations do more to improve a pitcher's ability at the plate.

                        I don't see what's confusing about this.

It's not a matter of simply taking extra BP. Your average high school hitter who gets drafted needs five years in the minors before he's prepared to face big league pitching. How do you think most players from the draft would fare against major league pitchers if they were immediately called up to the majors? They'd probably look like most pitchers up there.

You realize that they work on pitching more than hitting right? I rather have them keep working on their pitches then working on hitting.

You are off my friend. They need to work on pitching more. The more time you spend on hitting that is less time you can do for pitching.

Everyone's a critic, and not every pitcher has a little Rick Ankiel waitint to come out OP.
