What about 27 strikeouts in 9 innings!?! Ha!

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Not extremely luck based, but right place right time. I love the triple play when they are turned around the horn.

I had this bar conversation before, 20+ K's or a no hitter. My opinion, 20k's is a dominant performance. The ball went into play 7 times for outs. That means he has the batters guessing the entire game. If a pitcher is struggling with command, there is no way he is striking out 20.

      The two most recent lines:

      Kerry Wood: 1h 0r 0rbi 20k
      Roger Clemens: 5h 0r 0rbi 20k

Even Clemens' first 20k game he only allowed 3hits and 1 run.

Now let me clarify, I said dominant. The no-hitter is still a major feat to accomplish, and the perfect game is still the greatest. 20k's is pwnage .

        Thanks for digging that up.

Sandman, why does a no hitter being more of a team accomplishment diminish it? That's what Gammons was eluding to also. Sure if you're talking about the pitcher you can say it wasn't really HIS no hitter but if we're comparing the feats (no hitter vs cycle) and not the players that accomplish them, then why does it matter?

That's a 1st ballot Hall of Fame game. I thought about that often. Now imagine on 81 pitches.

Since the end of this thread title says "no hitters already."

When was a no-hitter thrown this year? Did I miss something?

When looking at no-hitters, remember, these also include rain shortened games and some that were completed by multiple pitchers used in the same game. Don't know how many, but the "true" no hitters numbers meaning 1 pitcher minimum 9 innings is less than what you see.

I remember watching the Andy Hawkins No-Hitter that he lost. A walk, an error, a sac fly and another error and 2 runs scored is how I believe it ended.

I was thinking the same thing...Also, who had a no-hitter and lost last year? He played for the Angels - was it Jered Weaver?

Well, it also has to be a complete game (in some people's eyes). There is more than one pitcher to have thrown a no-hitter after nine innings but for the game to go to extra innings. I remember when Mark Gardner did it after nine complete and got it broken up in the tenth against Montreal.

Alright, how about this example: a pitcher ends up losing the game in his no-hitter attempt because of the exact reasons that you put, but he did it before the ninth inning and he was on the away team. So the home team shuts down the away team in the ninth, and he's not even able to go back out there for one more inning to throw nine complete innings and go for that specific no-hitter based on the qualifications you just stated. Would that be considered a no-hitter worth recognizing? It's not even like rain was a part of the equation, it was simply just that they lost the game and the home team didn't have to bat again. No-hitter, or yes-hitter?

                    Steve Nebraska

Striking out all 27 St. Louis Cardinals batters on 81 consecutive pitches. Facing Ozzie Smith with two outs in the ninth inning, Nebraska's 81st and final pitch of the game is so fast that it knocks down his catcher and the home plate umpire. Nebraska also hits 2 home runs to account for the only scoring in the 2-0 victory.

Its a no-hitter. At least MLB recognizes it as one.

Thats what I'm saying if you look at the number of no-hitters that MLB has on record, they are not all of the 1 pitcher 9 iinning variety.

Vida Blue has a 5 inning no hitter......

So out of the 200 or so No Hitters on record, there are some included in there that aren't "true" no hitters. Thats all I'm saying. They are even a bit more rare than what history would indicate.

No hitters 1970-1998...Just for an example

When was a no-hitter thrown this year? Did I miss something?
I meant a handful of no hitter chances.

Let me tell you something, every pitcher steps on the mound with a no-hitter chance in the first inning. Exactly when is the line drawn, or the recognition notified? The fifth?

You know what I love? When announcers make note of, "Well, aside from that bad five run inning he's been doing well." Well, you can't just set five runs aside, whether they're in one inning or five. A bad outing is just that, and if you don't pull the leash quickly enough, a good one can go sour very quickly.

Stan Ross wasn't going to go in the Hall of Fame with 2,997 hits, and Mike Mussina wasn't recognized two days after being a strike away from a perfect game against Boston. Because he didn't throw it. It's not enough to get close. Barry Bonds gets bashed for it by every Pirate and Brave fan that remembers that 1992 NLCS game that he didn't throw out Bream. Didn't matter how close it got, the run scored and the Braves won.

This is where we get "So close, yet so far away" from.

MY POINT exactly! Although I consider 6 to 8th close

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.
