Why oh Why do the Sox/Yanks play such long games?!
OK so they scored a ton of runs yesterday so that can be excused a bit but man every time these two teams hook up the games go literally 4 hrs. It can't be the commercial breaks can it? I'm no fan of those two so can anyone who's a fan and seen a ton of series between these two teams give me an idea of how come they take so long to play 9 innings of baseball?

Multiple reasons. The commercial breaks are just one. The one that probably contributes most though is that both lineups see a lot of pitches and every at-bat seems to last an eternity. Girardi and Torre both like to buy time for relievers and make a lot of pitching changes. Francona less so. -

Back in the 90's before the Orioles completely imploaded the O's and Yankees would play some 9 inning marathons.
Like Misfit said though with two patient lineups like these two teams a lot of pitches are going to be thrown. None of the starters on either team are particularly fast workers, so that doesn't help either.Comment

It is NOT the commercials, because every team gets the same time in between innings and unless they have the players just standing around waiting for the commercials to be over its not the commercials.ESPN NFL 2K5 GREATEST FOOTBALL GAME EVER!

I'm not going to do the Google research; I'll just go with the most likely guess...
Two teams with a high pitch/plate appearance ratio, with so much offensive talent that they probably are well above the average for plate appearances/game, as well.
Throw in the fact that seemingly every game has a playoff atmosphere (with a little more deliberate playoff-type pace). Then top it off with any increased ads for nationally televised games, and you've got the ingredients for marathons.Comment

I always assumed, since the tickets were like $50 for a nosebleed seat,it was to ensure the customer got his/her money's worth. :wink:Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.

I'm pretty sure they play 9 innings like anyone else. The games are longer if the game is tied, which is called extra innings.Madden lover since 1996.
