    What does it mean when

    an analyst says a player has good or bad range?

    It means how well a fielder can move to field a ball. The more range the better the fielder isat getting to a hit ball. The less range means he don't move so well.

            Yup... it's a players ability to cover field on fly balls... how fast they can get back to the track for a catch, can run in on bloopers, if you look at the backed up cam of a ballfield during a game, you'll see a LOT of ground between left and center and center and right. That's why you're OF with the best range is generally the CF, the LF and RF's main duty is to watch the lines, among other duties.

              Yup... it's a players ability to cover field on fly balls... how fast they can get back to the track for a catch, can run in on bloopers, if you look at the backed up cam of a ballfield during a game, you'll see a LOT of ground between left and center and center and right.                 Also, don't confuse range and speed. Especially when you talk about infielders. Being fast doesn't guarantee that a player will have great range in the field. I guess you could say range is the sum of a player's ability to position themselves properly, get a good jump on the ball, and eventually track it down.
