I really don't think your problem is mental. Its not like on a routine ground ball, your have a lot more time to think about your girlfriend, compared to one you have to charge.

I played 3rd base my entire baseball career. What I think your problem is, that your mechanics are different on each type of throw. Most of the time, while playing third, your throws are going to be a pretty close play at 1st. But when you get that fast grounder, and you have plenty of time, your not setting up the way you practice throwing, and in effect, you are throwing differently.

I think it was said before, maybe not, but even on routine simply plays, set up how you normally do, and throw. And even if it doesn't correct the problem, if you hurry up, maybe that ball you throw that goes 10 feet short, will still beeat the runner.

    Hope that helps.

one thing that I keep catching myself doing is that I will throw the ball, but I will watch the ball as I throw. Meaning, I am not looking at my target, but the ball as it is coming out of my hand. When I do this, I am really erratic. When I watch my target, I am dead on.

Dunno why I do it, but I seem to do it and then I have to remind myself to look at the target for the whole duration of the throw.
Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. I wish I would have seen this sooner... (damn long weekend)... I had the exact same problem when I was a junior in high school... my throws were terrible in the early portions of the season... I mean, it was if I had never thrown a baseball before... I was a catcher and one day it all hit me and I couldn't get the ball anywhere in the infield, but when I moved to work in the outfield my throws were on-line and strong... it was definately a mental thing for me... what a coach did was after practice one day he had me make throws towards the press box in center field... he told me to just cut it loose and not worry about where the throws went... it worked (not instantly) and I have had only a couple of relapses (always at the beginning of the season...) hope everything works out and remember this hasn't just happened to you... many have been inflicted with this problem... good luck

              Update:
Yesterday before my game, it was getting worse. In playing catch for a few minutes, around 15 feet away, my throws were all over the place, it was crazy. Then when warming up in the in field with ground balls, the throws were just as bad, maybe worse, way off the line whether I was throwing to first, or home.

In the actual game, nothing came to me, so I don't know how I would have done when I had to make a quick play.

Then today in practice, I don't know what I did, but everything seemed fine, all my throws were right on the money. Pretty strange. Hopefully I can keep doing that tommorrow.

                  Weird.

Today during practice (inner squad), i turned from a power pitcher to a TOTAL finesse pitcher. My fork was working perfect, and I grounded everyone out 'cept 3, 2 I struck out and one person singled. In 3 innings against my own varsity team, that's pretty damn good in my book.
