    Re: Is there..

I am also a freshman pitcher on my varsity team, and let me tell you to throw fastballs about 85% of the time. If you are a starter, face your first 9 hitters with nothing but good old fashioned fastballs (don't throw em too hard either... save that for about the 4th or 5th). The next time you face them, remember how they hit off you (if they did). Find out their strengths and weaknesses. I will always think that pitching is 75% mental. You gotta know what to throw to each person. If they are swinging early, start them off NOT by throwing a changeup, but by using fastball grip and just throw slower (the changeup is a specified pitch where different fingering is needed, therefore will affect your accuracy... just start them out with a slow strike). Then just keep experimenting. If they tend to try to look fastball (and homerun), throw the deuce.

That's all I gotta say. Oh, and does anyone know how to throw a decent splitter? i just can't get that good of a drop.

I agree with this. I throw probably 90-93 % fastballs in an outing. However, I'm not a firm believer in throwing your fastball slower. Changing speeds is a good thing, but you need to keep your arm speed the same. If you find a way to throw your fastball 2-3 MPH slower with the same armspeed than, by all means, use it! But when you get to the REAL GOOD hitters who watch arm speed and such, you will begin to get whiplash from turning around.

Once you get control of your fastball, go to the change. With those two pitches you can be unhittable. Believe me.

Trust me, a curveball is like Golf or Bowling, easy to learn, hard to master. Take your time and worry about mechanics and control first and don't rush into the breaking balls.

i like that pfunk. i bowl and play baseball. thats why.

i don't know yet but i might pitch a little this summer on JV. we only have like 2 pitchers and they are both freshman. i'm a sophomore and last year we had 4 pitchers. 2 really sucked. 1 was good and the other was alright. well this year. one moved up to varsity. one quit and the other 2 don't know if they are going to pitch. i can throw a pretty good 2 seam, 4 seam. i never learned a changeup so i throw a splitter instead. i can throw that pretty well now. i also have somewhat of a slider that i can throw. i just read that its not good to throw so i may stop throwing that.
                      Teams:

                      NFL - Packers & Browns
                      MLB - Brewers & Twins
NCAA Football - Wisconsin, LSU, Virginia Tech
                      Soccer - Arsenal, Wolverhampton
                      NHL - Wild

Dude! You should be VERY careful throwing the splitter at your age, I DO NOT ADVISE ANY YOUNG PITCHER TO THROW A SPLITTER. I hurt my arm throwning splitter's back in the '80s and I still get the same soreness if I throw much now. I threw them all the time and had guys swinging at pitches that bouced on the plate, but it wasn't worth it. With the split you don't have as much behind the ball so there is less resistance from your fingers.
Basically, it's like throwing a wiffle ball as hard as you can and I'm sure you can imagine what that could do.
If you want to add a great pitch that won't screw your arm I recomend the circle change. You get the same arm action as a fastball, just like the split, but you don't get the wear on your arm. Now, a circle change won't drop like a splitter, but you can get some tailing action that's wicked. For a right handed pitcher you can get the ball to tail in towards a right handed hitter. When the hitter does make contact it's almost always a ground ball, cuz they're out in front and cue it, or the tailing action gets in on their fists.
                          Good Luck
