    Chris Coghlan's "Ransom Ball"

Marlins rookie Chris Coghlan hit his first career homer a couple days ago and claimed that the fan that caught it held it for ransom from him until the fan got what he wanted. The first part is Coghlan's side while the link at the bottom is the fans side. What are your opinions on this?

...And while Coghlan said the fan was willing to give the ball back, the man's original asking price was a lot higher than the Marlins rookie outfielder anticipated.

"He wasn't the most polite or respectful guy about the whole process," Coghlan said Thursday. "He told me he goes around a lot and catches these balls and holds them for ransom -- even though he doesn't say that he does, it seems that way."

But the fan, Nick Yohanek, insisted Coghlan could have been more respectful to him.

"I explained that ballhawking is my hobby and that what I was asking in return was fair," Yohanek said Thursday, in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "I told him I make $50,000 a year working in law enforcement and that I didn't feel like I was asking for too much. He responded, 'Good for you.' Real classy. Way to respect law enforcement. Way to respect a fan."

Players who achieve personal milestones often want to keep the ball as a souvenir, and in all but the most high-profile cases -- such as a record-setting home run ball that might fetch big money at an auction -- it has become standard practice for the player to give the fan who caught it a souvenir such as a signed bat in return.

Coghlan said he gave the fan a signed bat and took a photo with him after Wednesday's game. As Coghlan discovered, that only seemed like a starting point for further negotiations.

"Then he wanted other things that I didn't think [were] fair," Coghlan said.

Coghlan said the fan also asked for tickets to one of the Marlins' upcoming games against the New York Yankees, along with a ball and signed bat from Coghlan's more famous Marlins teammate, Hanley Ramirez.

"I was trying to be as nice and respectful as I could," Coghlan said. "But I told him he could only get one."

Yohanek, who says he has caught a total of 49 home runs, offered a significantly different version of the episode.

Yohanek said his negotiations for the ball began with several members of the Marlins' staff -- and after his request for a Ramirez bat was turned down, he requested tickets not for the Yankees series, but for a Brewers-Marlins series at Florida in June.

"I had wanted to attend this series anyway," Yohanek said. "Considering [Marlins] attendance is barely over 15,000 nightly, I didn't feel like this was too much to ask."

Yohanek said he eventually handed over the ball for the promise of tickets to the Brewers-Marlins series, a bat with the inscription "To Nick, thanks for catching my 1st home run," and a photo with Coghlan.

"While posing for the photo, he said, 'You gonna give me the ball, man, or what?" Yohanek said. "After he was given the home run ball, he stormed off without a word. Only to return and say, 'Why y'all gotta hold my ball for ransom?' I hold balls for ransom? Those are Chris Coghlan's words, not mine."
And this is the fan's account...

Imagine, for a second, you get called up to the show.  It’s your first week in the big leagues and you connect for your 1st career home run.  A fan catches the ball in the bleachers…

Damn, I just read that whole blog and all the comments. It took me like 45 minutes to do so, but was entertaining to say the least. I don't have a problem with the guy asking for a Hanley bat or another bat with chris's sig on it. I wasn't there to hear the tone of the conversation.......so I choose not to decide who is wrong or right I guess.

      Re: Chris Coghlan's "Ransom Ball"

This is a tough situation to gauge, a regular "He said, He said" situation. Upon my first read of the story my gut had me siding with Chris Coghlan. There's plenty of arguments both ways, particularly the "he caught the ball, so it's his" approach. There is certainly a sentimentality for those lucky enough to shag a home run ball. With that said, this fellow has shagged fifty home run balls and while it's his right to hold the ball "ransom" so to speak, I can confidently say I would give the ball up if I were in the same situation. It'd just seem like the right thing to do.

The fan screwed up. He should have said Coghlan could have it. But if he made the HOF, he'd get 1 mill. That ball is worthless to everyone but Coghlan. But if it was the 1st HR for a HOF, that ball could be worth a lifetime's salary.

The Marlins should give the guy any bat or ticket he wants.

And as John said, they should sign a contract that if the player makes the Hall or reaches certain milestones, the fan gets paid.

Lol...It reminds me of the movie ransom with Mel Gibson, but instead of saying "Give me back my son", you say "Give me back my ball".

              Re: Chris Coghlan's "Ransom Ball"

I'm gonna believe the fan here because there is photo and video evidence of his demands. He made it real simple. He listed what he wanted (which wasn't much at all for a first career homerun) and finished watching the game.

The Marlins were the ones that went about it wrong. When you throw guy after guy to a fan you have to realize that the organization is trying to get over you. There was no need to have different guys come up to the player to ask for the ball. I don't care about the he said, he said. People can come up disrespectful if their frustrated. Sometimes people just don't correctly gauge attitude. So, I don't care about that fluff.

There is, however, no need to make this a show and the Marlins did. All they had to do was take the list and provide him what he asked for in return for the ball. If they could not get one of those things they should have said, "Hey, we can't get you Hanley's bat. I'm sorry. What can we do instead?" Fan would have asked for tickets and the Marlins should have said, "Ok, no problem. Tickets it is."

Boom, end of conversation and everyone is happy.

The Marlins messed up and it's obvious that they were trying to cater to their player. I'll remember this when it comes to finding out if a certain ballplayer is classy. Coghlan, you fail.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I read this the other day and found it humorous. It'd be one thing if (as a fan) it was the fan's first HR ball that he's caught but if it's like he's 40th or something which he states then the fan is being greedy.

There's no such thing as being greedy.

If the Marlins and the player didn't want to pay the fan, they didn't have to.

I kinda thought the fan was being a little ridiculous in asking for Hanley Ramirez game bat, maybe that's me. I feel like the interaction should be between the fan and the player and not the team's best player who wasn't involved in the situation.

If I ever caught somebody's first home run ball I'd just ask to return it to them in person and get a quick pic with them. The ball has no monetary value itself, why try to get something for nothing?

I can guarantee you Coghlan does not make enough money to retire on at this point in his career.

I am 100% sure if you actually knew Chris Coghlan you wouldn't be so thrilled with this fan.

Then you're 100% wrong. I don't know the fan or Coghlan. Like I said in my 1st post, the fan should give him the ball w/a contract stating he'll get paid if Coghlan makes the Hall. I see nothing wrong w/that.

All the guy supposedly asked for was a free ticket, which Coughlan doesn't have to pay for, & a free autographed bat, which Hanley & Coghlan don't have to pay for. And he's putting the Marlins in a bind??? Give me a freakin' break.
