8/1 thru 8/31 Game Discussion Thread

Well any thoughts of the Cardinals having as a compelling second half of the season as they did the first quickly vanished. To quote Dennis Green the Cardinals "are who we thought they were".

Elsewhere, a lot of intriguing races and teams to watch this 2nd half. The Marlins just swept the Yankees to be the "feel good story" of baseball this year. The Mets and Phillies are likely going to come down to the wire as to who wins the NL East. The Tigers are self-imploding. The AL East and West may actually be a 3 team race these final 8 weeks and the Padres are keeping pace in NL West with the Dodgers.

Enjoy the final two months of the regular season.

Jays have been playing bad lately but still on top the AL East.

Still lots of baseball to be played, but there is a small cushion of at least knowing that 85 wins seems to be the mark to make the playoffs right now, and they're at 65 already with 49 games to go.

League wise, there's a chance both top WC teams finish better than the 3 seed in their respective leagues.

It's happened the last 3 seasons in the AL and 4 of the last 5 in the NL.

Can't wait for the expansion and realignment in the league. No need for 3 divisions per league

Can Jays stay in the NL?

      Bo channeling his inner Dante.

      6 RBI in 6ABs.

Coors has seen this from a Bichette before..

Bo knows contract years. He'll be asking for 300M+ come winter.

Cardinals take 2 of 3 from the Dodgers because why not?

Team going to do just enough to keep Marmol employed for one more season.

              Talk about flashback Friday:

              Scherzer vs Kershaw

First time they faced off was September 2008.

Dodgers would go on to win that series and would win the NL West by 2 games despite being the 7th best team in the NL.

And crazy enough, that wasn't even the original pitching matchup that day, it was supposed to be Johnson vs Maddux.

Given the modern usage of starting pitchers, tonight may well be the last time* we ever see a matchup between 200-game winners, let alone members of the 3000 Strikeout Club and 3x Cy Young winners.

*Hopefully we get one final Kershaw vs Verlander duel before season's end

Shohei Ohtani singles on a ground ball to second base after his bat breaks on the hit in the 3rd inning

Not MLB related but the AAA Buffalo Bisons starters the next 3 games:

Yesavage (5th pitching prospect in baseball)

Manoah (still rehabbing hoping to return to his form a few years ago)

Bieber (perhaps his final start before returning from injury to the majors)

There are five players with the last name of Seymour in MLB history.

Three of them appeared simultaneously in the Rays-Giants game tonight (Ian, Bob, and Carson).

Them being on these rosters at all was almost a stroke of improbability, with Bob making his debut tonight, Ian being traded from Miami at the deadline, and Carson debuting a little over a month ago. With two of them being relief pitchers though, them both appearing in the same full inning was also pretty unlikely.

Jays come back down 5-2 late to win, and Hoffman with 3ks for the save?

And on top of all that, Bieber looks like he's up to MLB form on his rehab and could join the Jays by next week. Jays roster with Bieber and Scherzer in the rotation, with Scherzer not looking washed any more and Bieber working his way back too, this could be a scary rotation going in to the playoffs if they have 6 options as starters and obviously only need 4 for the series.

I'm now waiting for the day (if it hasn't happened already) where some teams scorebug has the batter/pitcher matchup with Seymour ____ on the screen.

Jose Butto would be an ideal opponent.

If you're the height of Altuve and weight of Stanton, that doesn't mean you can't steal a base in a major league game.
