    Report: Braves release Glavine

    By CHRISTIAN BOONE
    Atlanta Journal-Constitution
    Wednesday, June 03, 2009
Tom Glavine, the winning pitcher in the game that clinched the Atlanta Braves’ only World Series championship, was released Wednesday, FoxSports.com and ESPN.com is reporting.
National baseball writer Ken Rosenthal, citing major league sources, said the team told Glavine he was being let go because his velocity is down. Glavine was throwing only 76-78 miles per hour in spring training but in recent starts had increased that to 83-86 miles per hour.
    <!--endtext--><!--endclickprintinclude-->

<!--startclickprintinclude--><!--begintext-->The Braves’ rotation was getting crowded, with prized prospects Kris Medlen and Tommy Hanson seemingly ready to join a staff that’s been one of the National League’s best over the season’s first quarter.
Glavine returned to the Braves in 2008 after a stint with the New York Mets. His return season was cut short by injury, and he underwent minor elbow and shoulder surgeries during the offseason. He did not appear in a single game for the Braves this season.

This doesn't make any sense. He just had his third rehab start last nite and was very impressive, pitching 6 scoreless innings. Why would he be released the next day?

Because he's not worth the money we would've had to pay him. Never should have re-signed him in the first place.

I still think it's a BS move...you bring him up, let him try. If it doesn't work out he retires as a Brave and you send him on his way. He deserves that much respect as he's done so much for the Braves over the last 20+ years.

Pretty sure his money escalators have something to do with it, not including the trade they were probably working on.

I think Glavine was set to make $1 million for his first day on the roster, $1.25 million at 30 days and then $1.25 more for 90 days on the roster.

Looks like they might rather bring up Hanson for now...or try and bring back Glavine a bit later under a different deal.

Looks like Hanson is going to be called up to start on Saturday.

Sucks that it went down like that, but the Braves are a better team without him. Shouldn't have signed him in the first place.

They cut him due to money... and the beginning of the Hanson era.

Sad News IMO. Hopefully he'll be picked up somewhere.

I wouldn't mind the Cardinals picking him up. Duncan can do something with him. I'm about tired of Wellemeyer

Pretty sad way for a Hall of Fame career to potentially end. There is no loyalty in sports.

I'd say the Red Sox resigning Varitek for a ludicrous sum of money could be considered loyalty.

He was only resigned because the Red Sox could not find a good, young catcher. And he had to take a huge paycut. We'll see how loyal the Red Sox are as the David Ortiz saga drags on.
