    Randy Johnson reaches 300 wins

A controversial strike call sealed The Big Units 300th win.

Now, there are close calls in every game, its part of the nature of the sport, human error always comes into play. However, when ever one of these close calls results in a historical or significant result, it becomes controversial. The idiots over at yahoo posted a poll as to whether or not this was a strike. he options were Definitely a Ball, Definitely a Strike, and Strike Given the Circumstances. Personally, I am appalled by the third option as the circumstances should never figure in to the strike zone.

Anyway, this is a huge milestone for Johnson and I figured we should have a thread on it as he may be the last pitcher to reach the 300 win plateau.

Regarding the strike call. It's so close that looking at it live as an umpire it's a close call. I have no problem with it being called a strike as human error is part of the game.

As for Johnson, he's only the 6th lefty to achieve this mark and indeed he may very well be the last guy to win 300 for a LOOONG time. Maybe if Nolan Ryan is successful in his goal of stretching pitchers out in Texas and having them pitch more then a measly 100 pitches a game it might become fashionable again to have pitchers pitching deep into games and thus factoring in the W/L column more often.

Until then, we should savor this moment.

I have a picture w/my brother , Randy Johnson, and myself from when I was like 8. It's awesome. And watching him pitch was awesome.

You can't judge a pitch by looking at a picture head-on like that. You can't tell where the ball is at it hits the front of the plate and crosses over. At the point that picture was taken, it looks like it's well past Dunn and about to be caught.

Pitch FX has the pitch being in the bottom of the zone, a far more accurate tool than a .jpeg.

Congratulations to Randy Johnson. We could all very be well be witnessing the last 300 game winner in baseball history.

I think so too, unless something changes. Just think the record is 511 wow! I know they pitched every day, but still that is a number that will never get reach! Not even close.

I remember watching him in HS pitching against my brother. My brother got 2 single off him, but he was the only one to get 2 hits off him that game. He was a freak! I think they lost, I can't remember.
