Re: Bryce Harper to be eligible for 2010 draft
looks like the nationals might spend around 100 million for 2 draft picks
now the question is if the Orioles get the number 1 pick do they draft Harper and trade him or pick someone else if he is indeed to be the number 1 pick -
Re: Bryce Harper to be eligible for 2010 draft
The Orioles won't get the #1 pick. Even if they did, you can't trade a player for at least a couple of years in baseball after you draft them.http://flotn.blogspot.com

The Padres traded Kyler Burke to the Cubs one year after they drafted him. In the Gonzalez-Young-Eaton-Sledge-Otsuka trade, the sixth player, Billy Killian, was drafted during the season that year.Last edited by BatsareBugs; 06-14-2009, 11:33 PM.Comment

Leaving high school a year early to enroll in a JUCO, but since he is getting his GED he is eligible for the draft next year. Nationals now with the possibility of getting Strasburg and Harper in back to back years.Comment

Re: Bryce Harper to be eligible for 2010 draft
This will not happen because unlike football or basketball (where you need college), Baseball has an extensive minor league system, allowing a player to devolp down there.Comment

Re: Bryce Harper to be eligible for 2010 draft
I guess I'm the only one who finds this ridiculous? A kid is bypassing his high-school years to go to a JUCO, get his GED in 1 year and go pro in next year's draft...all for money.
Per his Dad:
"Even if he's not [draft eligible in 2010]," Ron said, "he will play 55 games a year with a wood bat and receive an associate art degree. It's a good situation for him." Link

Re: Bryce Harper to be eligible for 2010 draft
I love the soapboxers... please, 99% of the population will leave high school if a guaranteed multimillion dollar deal is staring at them in the face. The other 1% of the population is already worth more than the deal this guy will get when he gets drafted.Comment

Re: Bryce Harper to be eligible for 2010 draft
He's wasting his time. He would have been a top 3 pick in this year's draft. In that one year, he's going to be making more than most people do in 30+ years. No matter what happens in his career, the guy is will be set for life.
Not to mention getting to play against better competition, and be able to develop quicker. I would assume his parents want what's best for him, and I think they made the right choice.Fan of....
