Probably was. I couldn't remember. One of the funnier things I've ever seen in a ball game.

Gaylord Perry was notorious for the Spitball.

Kevin Gross of the phillies got cought in the 80's having sandpaper in the glove.

Is the "Snot" ball legal to use like that guy in Major League the movie?

Yeah it gives the ball extra movement. This is the same reason why after a ball is thrown in the dirt the umpire gives the pitcher a new ball.

quite the opposite, there is nothing worse than trying to throw a perfectly clean ball, its slippery. In the men's league I play in the ump dropped the new ball on the ground and rolled it in the dirt with his foot as a favor to the pitcher so that he would not have to throw a clean ball. When the pitcher throws the ball in to get a new one, he probably wants one that is rubbed up a bit.
I thought it was because pitchers like using pearls, and they don't want to use the ones in the dirt.

I thought all the balls were already rubbed with dirt before being used. I saw it on some show that they have this big bucket of balls that are rubbed with dirt.

Bird - I think you are right. I hate throwing balls right out of the box. A ball that is completly muffed up isn't great either, a happy medium is where its at.
