I like Smoltz more because he has the history of being a starter hence he has more pitches in his repetiore. The conversion to closer also will add years to his career. In essence he's the modern day Dennis Eckersley.

Yeah Gagne has a mean change and a high 90's fastball. If you look at all these closers they all have one dominat pitch and it's the fastball...maybe except of Hoffman who has a great slider...

Smoltz is the better closer. However I like Gagne better myself.

I made the same comparison of Smoltz and Eck to my homey the other day. Before, as an occasioanal all - star, very good pitcher, I didn't think of Smoltz as a sure hall of famer, but now! if he can keep it up in the pen, for who know's how long, i'd have to say the guy has a great shot at the hall.

                    Re: Better Closer

in all honesty i'd rather smoltz be starting, but its a nice sense of security knowing that smoltz is coming in the 9th to seal the deal.

pretty much summed up my opinion, a starter who becomes a closer is most of the time better than someone who was a closer their whole career. plus i think the Braves are over 70-0 when Smoltz pitches in a game
