Considering only current MLB players, if there has to be 2 teams built, one filled with only MLB pitchers and the other filled with MLB positional players, and they play a 7 game series against each other, which team wins? And who would you field/pitch on each team? No DH rule in play for this series.

Shamelessly stole this elsewhere.

Re: Hypothetical: roster of pitchers vs positional players
Without putting much thought into it. Really quick I thought of these pitchers that would be good for pitching, fielding and hitting:
Babe Ruth
Carlos Zambrano
Johan Santana
Micah Owings
Tom Glavine
Greg Maddux
Livan HernandezMLB: New York Mets
NFL: New York Giants
NBA: New York Knicks
NCAAF: Rutgers Scarlet Knights/Michigan Wolverines
NCAAB: Michigan Wolverines -
Re: Hypothetical: roster of pitchers vs positional players
At first I was going to say the team of pitchers would win because even pitchers would be able to hit the 70 MPH junk that position players are throwing. Then I realized the pitchers would have to play defense also, and I doubt they could play any position well.
I'd have to go with the team of hitters just because the team of pitchers would give up so many runs because of a horrible defense.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Hypothetical: roster of pitchers vs positional players
Most of the pitchers would be younger guys who went to college. The good ones will pitch and then play in the field or DH when not pitching.
Add Adam LaRoche for the fielders. He could have been a pitcher and has a 90+ arm.Comment

Re: Hypothetical: roster of pitchers vs positional players
I would say the hitters would win. Why? Most of these guys were pitchers in high school and college and have some idea of what they are doing on the mound. They wouldnt be throwing 70mph junk in most cases.Comment

Re: Hypothetical: roster of pitchers vs positional players
The hitters would own. You only need to find one or two position players that can bring some heat off the mound (there are plenty who can), while you would need to find an entire field's worth of pitchers that can actually hit worth a damn (not to mention field as well).Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Hypothetical: roster of pitchers vs positional players
If Rick Ankeil could actually find the plate you'd have your starting pitcher for the position players.
Suspending belief for a moment (meaning it's been a long, long time) some pitchers started out as position players in the minors. Tim Wakefield was a First Baseman. Trevor Hoffman a SS. Ron Mahay an Outfielder so it might not be too hard to find pitchers who could play other positions. As i said, suspend belief.
I do think the position players would win. Most pitchers don't like pitching past the 5th inning let alone have to play 9 innings and have to run the bases and play the field.Comment
