Re: What is the purpose of a double switch?

Lets go Pitt....I agree that debates like this not only make this board great, but are the reason baseball is FAR better than any other sport. With that, here's all the reasons you're wrong.

"Having had to watch Al Martin for years with the Pirates, I must disagree with this statement. And that was before he was old."

Al Martin had 7 years with more than 10 homers. How many current pitchers can say that?

"I know this, but do you really think an AL manager would do this if the option presented itself?"

If Mike Hampton were THAT good, than ya, he would.

"That's like saying a winter coat isn't necessary in the tropics because it's not cold there. Having a pitcher who's given up 2 runs in 7 innings, yet is coming to bat in a crucial moment in the game adds (god forbid) thought and strategy into the game. I fully believe that an AL manager could take a nap during the game, and be woken up only when the pitching coach nudges him and says "Joe Blow out there is looking tired" and their overall success would not be changed."

I agree that it would add more strategy, but you're missing my point. I'd GLADLY give up that extra bit of watching a manager think if it guarantees me GETTING TO WATCH THE PITCHER SOME MORE. What's better, watching Cox stress over wether to hit for Maddux, or watching Maddux actually pitch???? Sometimes strategy takes away from the fundamental joys of the game.

"This makes no sense. From what you're saying, you almost have to play for the 3 run homer all the time to have a chance (not true, but this is what you're telling me). If this is the case, you wouldn't want to risk losing baserunners by running steals or hit and runs.:

Again, not true. AL teams often play hit and run to avoid a double play to make sure their big guns get up. And I said you have to score more runs, not hit a 3 run homer.

As for the it's better argument, that can't be proven either way, but from all the baseball I watch, it is my opinion that there are more good pitchers and more good hitters in the AL.

Re: What is the purpose of a double switch?

Wow this thread got derailed quickly. I don't want to debate AL/NL I want to know more about the double switch. I've been an AL fan since becoming a baseball fan. However my home AAA team is considered NL as they're the SF Giants affiliate. I'm going to be going to alot of the games this year and want to score them, however I have NO IDEA how to score a double switch or really even what it's for.

I found these in a MVP 05 thread. However the bolded parts I don't understand as they're related to videogames.

Basically, you want to do a double switch in two instances. The first is what I just mentioned above: when you are bringing in a relief pitcher, but his spot is up in the next inning. (Say the 8, 9, and 1 spots are due in the next inning). My second baseman hits 7th and made the last out. So I make a double switch and take both my pitcher and second baseman out of the game. But when I put the two new players in the lineup, my pitcher goes into the 7 spot, and my second baseman goes into the 9 spot.

The other time to do a double switch is when you've pinch hit for the pitcher, and you want your pinch hitter to stay in the game. In this case, the best way is to go to the defensive alignment screen, and swap your pinch hitter (his position will be P) with whatever position you want him to play. Then when you go to substitute your pitcher, he will automatically go into the correct place.

        Hope this helps!
The bolded part in this one, while no related to videgames, is where i get lost.

lets say that your LF bats 6th.

Ok so you want to switch your pitcher, but at the same time you want to pitch hit for him the next inning but still keep him in the game.

The double switch allows you to do it in one step.

bring in your defensive replacement or your pinch hitter (that player could be both).

Let's say for example your the ST. Louis Cardinals.

You started Mark Mulder and he has pitched the game into the seventh inning inning he got the first guy out, but now he/you are in some trouble. He/you gave up a double to the gap. You have RHP Julian Tavarez all ready to go in the pen. You look at there lineup and notice that most of there hitters are righties so bringing in a right hander benefits you. Then you notice that Mulder is batting 3rd next inning but you want Julian to finish the seventh and start the 8th. So you opt for the double switch.

Ok the situation Reggie sanders recorded the last out in the previous inning a LFer. Your eligible outfield players are So Saguchi, john mabry and Hector Luna. your up by 2 runs at this point in the game so if you can effective holds by your relief pitching and a save then your in good position.

So the move that makes the most sense would to be in So Taguchi because he is a strong defender with a below avg. bat this allows you to save john mabry who is an avg. defender with a slightly better than avg. bat.

So you bring in So Taguchi. Tavarez get's out of the inning with no run's scored on him. In the bottom your 7, 8, and 9 hitters are up (taguchi is batting 9th). They all record outs and you fail to add to you lead.

In the next inning the top of the 8th Tavarez has a bad inning and gives up 3 runs. You find yourself down 6-5.

So now in the bottom of the current inning you have theese players coming up

        1. eckstien
        2 walker
        3. pujols
        4. edmonds
        5. rolen
        6. pitcher
        7. grudz
        8. molina
        9. taguchi

Here is were keepin your better hitter for later pays off.

you load the bases and there are 2 outs and the pitcher is due up so u pinch hit mabry and he singles. so keeping the better hitter for later in a situation were you didn't need him paid off.

this was an excessive example but i hope you get the point of it now.

Actually recently deceased former manger Gene Mauch created this move.
When you do a double switch my must you remove a position player?

In a double switch, not only are you removing a pitcher, but you are also substituting someone out that is in the field to protect the pitcher from having to hit right away. He then takes the spot in the order in which the subbed out player was in.

          Example:

Dodgers have Ted Lilly still in the game hitting in the 9th spot. They have Casey Blake in hitting in the 6th spot. You want to bring in a reliever to go more than one inning. So you take Blake out with a double switch and bring in a reliever. The reliever will then hit in the 6th spot (the spot where the removed fielder was) and the subsititute for Blake will hit in the 9th spot. That's the main reason why you do a double switch. And you have to double switch with a defender in the field, who else would you do it with...two pitchers?

Ok so I'm assuming then the next inning the batting order would be somewhere around the 8,9,1 spot then yeah? Or else why would you want the releiver to hit higher in the lineup?

The batter would take the pitchers spot in the 9 hole. This is useful because if it's late in the game and your 6th spot just ended the inning the that will be the spot that furthest away from hitting again. Make sense?

A double switch is more of a defensive replacement a lot of the time. The Phillies would pinch hit for the pitcher with, say, Ben Francisco (Backup OF last year), but then put him in left for Ibanez cause Ben's defense was superior. Since Ben pinch hit for the pitcher, however, he has to hit in the pitcher spot, and the new pitcher will have to hit in Ibanez's spot

In that scenario, yes. Or you could call someone from the bull pen, and do a double switch so if the order is 8, 9, 1, it would be 8th hitter, defensive replacement, leadoff hitter, instead of 8th hitter, pitcher spot, leadoff hitter

I can't give you any specific numbers on when the changes occur, but it doesn't have to happen when the pitcher comes to the plate. It could happen at the start of an inning, or the middle of an inning when a pitching change is made. To continue the previous example...

The Phillies are at home, they have the lead, Ibanez just made the final out in the bottom of the 7th inning. In the top of the 8th inning they bring in a new reliever, putting him in Ibanez's spot, and bring in a defensive replacement in the pitcher's spot.

Yes it does. So I think I'm getting the idea of the Double Switch when you're in the field/pitching. But this new scenario with the Double Switch while batting is a little confusing.

How about this question. Can you do the Double Switch in MLB the Show when your team is up to bat?

The reason I ask is that way I can play an exhibition game with an NL team and attempt to see this play out that way.

You could download the demo version of OOTP 11 and mess with the various double-switch possibilities there.

Since there isn't much more to add to the facets of a double-switch, I just wanted to include that if a manager wants to double-switch, he has to approach the umpire about it before crossing the base line and initiating a pitcher substitution. I remember the Giants getting screwed over this once and not being able to make that double-switch because of this.
