    Re: Matt Williams

Well, from what I read in the paper the Cubs would probably deal Bobby Hill and either Todd Wellemeyer, or Juan Cruz.....The Dodgers are offering Joe Thurston so hopefully if they do have to trade him they'll trade him to the cubs...

Remember when Juan Cruz struck out all those mets in the first or second game of the year at Shea? Now his ERA is around 7. What happened to this guy? On that apperance in early April his stuff seemed filthy.

ya, cruz was dominate against the giants too. I'd like to know what's up w/ him also.
the Dodgers may have trouble unloading Thurston right now, there was a report that his attitude needed to be put in check and that's why he got sent down, of course that's speculation.

Cruz has been incredibly inconsistent, walked in several runs against the Pirates recently to turn a 1-0 deficit into a lost cause.

He just got sent down to Iowa, there goes his trade value. They said they want him to start there, maybe fillin as a spot starter later on.

                  that's too bad
alot of times when a guy like that corrects his mechanics and gains control their ball loses movement, so they start throwing strikes, but then they get hit hard,
                  guess we'll have to see.

I think part of it is that the Cubs pitching is so deep that Cruz's pitching opportunities have been limited.

Steve Stone was trying to defend him after the Pittsburgh game disaster (Memorial Day?) saying he was rusty because he hadn't pitched in 8-9 days.

The Cubs are very high on Cruz and have resisted alot of trade offers. Maybe they just want to let him get a lot of innings and get his confidence back. And it does sound like they want him out of the bullpen anfd getting back to being a starter.

Maybe another starter (Clement? Zambrano? even Wood?) will be traded soon...

It's funny that you mentioned that you fear Houston more. I've said it time and time again, that, while I like to see the Cubs lose to anyone (even Houston), I'd rather be chasing the Cubs than the Astros any day.

But, I wouldn't look past the StL starting pitchers. It's the bullpen that has been the only weakness on that staff. But, Izzy's around the corner, so I'm feeling optimistic.

And as far as Vina staying hurt, I hope he does too. Btw, don't be too surprised to see the Cards snatch Luis Castillo off the 'marked down, everything must go' bin.

Things are going to be very interesting.
