Do umpires usually inspect broken bats for cork or any type of altered bat? Was it a coincidence that they found out that his bat was corked?

usually when a large piece flys out into the field like that I often see an infielder pick it up, and when they do, they ALWAYS look. At least I always seem to notice them looking. I know I would.Comment
