    Broken Bats

Do umpires usually inspect broken bats for cork or any type of altered bat? Was it a coincidence that they found out that his bat was corked?

Umpires generally are the ones who pick up the bat pieces if they're close by, so they probably just noticed that it looked weird.

usually when a large piece flys out into the field like that I often see an infielder pick it up, and when they do, they ALWAYS look. At least I always seem to notice them looking. I know I would.

Last night, the catcher picked it up and told the ump that it was "interesting". Then they inspected it.

I thought the exact same thing. I thought that the way the bat brooke was very awkward.
