What's with all the broken bats?

Have you ever seen so many broken bats in a major league season?

I remember when, about once a week, someone would get their bat broken in half on a swing. It was a rare occurrence and usually made Sportscenter.

Now, it happens like 5 or 6 times a game, plus many other at-bats where a splinter flies off the barrel or you hear the bat crack.

First, this is getting dangerous. These things are flying into the stands or out to the infielders on the fly on a regular basis. Second, is the league looking into what type of bats they're using, or how much they're shaving them down?

And you will see a lot next year until they go away from maple bats. But of course it will take serious injury before anything is done before that.

Yep, not until the first person is impaled.

Tonight the broadcast from the Rockies said broken bats went down 30% from last year (I believe they cited a report, didn't fully hear)

I don't see it very often with my team and the team playing vs Rockies.

Players have forgotten how to swing correctly and make solid contact. With small ballparks like CBP, I haven't ever seen so many "end of the bat" home runs before in my life until Pete Feliz and Raul Ibañez showed it was the new thing.

Until players stop caring so much about hitting home runs, they will continue to be inferior hitters and will proceed to break their bats often.

Acually broken bats are way down compared to last year.
I dont know what games you are watching but there is no were near 5 to 6 bats broken each game.
In your defense you are right compared to 25 years ago there are more broken bats now.
The reason is pretty simple, maple bats. Players love them as they have a sweeter sweet spot. The down side of them is if you dont hit the sweet spot they break.

Maple bats are horrible anyway. I can't stand the weight and feeling. I'm all ash all the way.

Re: What's with all the broken bats?

Am I the only one that remembers reading about maples when they were first gaining real popularity (2000-2003, maybe)?

There was an article--rife with comments from players--that was explicit in saying that Maple was more durable...that a player like Bonds would regularly use the same bat for several games, and would need fewer bats in general...while the traditional ash bats were always required in greater supply because they broke so much more frequently.

Some have argued that manufacturers are less selective in how they deal with wood and grain.

I think there is something to be said for stronger hitters with higher bat speed, thin handles, and harder baseballs (they are, aren't they?). I would also think some dynamic is at work that leads more hitters to be jammed given how closely they approach the plate in today's game.

Again, the bat was irrelevant. Bonds knows how to swing a bat and hit a ball squarely, most other players can just hit a ball far somewhat often.

As a Giants fan, watching players like Molina and Uribe approach pitches is embarrassing.
