Re: who do you consider the greatest baseball player of your generation
Who does everyone consider the best pitcher of their generation?
For me it's Greg Maddux. All those consecutive seasons of 15+ wins was insane.Comment

Hmm tough to say, personally i'd have said Clemens if he was clean but i'll go with a toss up between Jack Morris (the guy was THE money pitcher of the '80s) and Greg Maddux.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I am an 80's/90's child too. I think there were 4 players who were the best and I couldn't pick one of them over the others.
Junior
Bonds (at least while he was "clean")
Pedro

Re: who do you consider the greatest baseball player of your generation
There you go contradicting again w/out knowing fully what you're talking about.
1925, Ruth hit .290/25/66. Pujols season lows in his 9yr career are .314/32/100. And that 100 rbi is the current season. No one has put together 9 consecutive seasons @ that level, w/that production, in a wide spectrum of catergories, that consistently, over a 9yr period.
Like I said, read my blog. Its the only entry I have there. I researched this thuroughly.Originally posted by VP Richard M. NixonI always remember that whatever I have done in the past, or may do in the future, Duke University is responsible one way or the other.

Ruth: .356/.494/.745, 212 OPS+, 175 RC per 162 games
Pujols: .334/.427/.629, 172 OPS+, 158 RC per 162 games
I love Pujols as much as the next guy but Babe Ruth in the 20s is possibly the greatest stretch of dominance in the history of professional sports. Next time you call someone out for not knowing what they're talking about, make sure you know it yourself.Last edited by Ewing; 08-10-2009, 09:50 AM.Comment

I researched this thuroughly. What you fail to point out is that Ruth only played 98 games in 1925 because of a stomach sickness that required surgery. Whatever research you did it, it was poor. Here's some real research, the numbers for each guy during their spans.
Ruth: .356/.494/.745, 212 OPS+, 175 RC per 162 games
Pujols: .334/.427/.629, 172 OPS+, 158 RC per 162 games

Just about the only way you can compare them fairly, is to compare them against their contemporaries and see who dominated their era more. When it comes to that, Babe Ruth easily dominates Pujols. Ewing referenced OPS+ and it tries to equalize everything in comparison to the contemporaries of that time and Ruth between 1920-1928 holds 6 of the top 18 best OPS+ seasons in baseball history. Albert's greatest OPS+ season, this year, doesn't show up until #71.
If he keeps this up, Albert will deservedly go down as one of the all-time greats and HR King when he retires, but I'm going with the Babe on this one. Easily.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: who do you consider the greatest baseball player of your generation
When the chips were on the line the man was as dominant as any pitcher i've ever seen. His numbers don't look so great compared to some guys that came later but that's because Jack was a guy who toyed around while on the mound. He'd let the opposing team get their hits and runs but when he had to bear down he'd shut the opposition down.
The man pitched in quite a few big games in his career and did quite well. It's not like he was a piece of crap on the mound. The man had a streak of I think 20 seasons of being the Opening Day starter which is pretty darn amazing if you ask me. He also threw a No-Hitter and of course that '91 Game 7 against the Braves was a game for the ages.
I admit i'm a little biased as I really like Morris a lot. hence that's why I put Maddux in as a more objective answer as well.Last edited by SPTO; 08-10-2009, 11:00 AM.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: who do you consider the greatest baseball player of your generation
worst totals/percentage in a 9 year period........
Pujols
BA: .314
OB: .394
Slg: .561
HR: 32
RBI: 100*
run: 87*
The asterik means the current season. Projected for the end of the year, he'll have 143 RBI & 125 runs. Then his lows become 103 RBI & 99 runs.
Ruth.....
BA: .290
OB: .393
Slg: .543
HR: 25
RBI: 66
run: 61
Ruth has never put together nine consecutive seasons reaching those minimums. That's fact. Indisputable. Yes, he was injured. Its not his fault. But he still didn't do it. Ruth has the greater 8 yr period. But not 9. That belongs to Pujols, if he doesn't get hurt before the season ends.Originally posted by VP Richard M.
