Its for interleague play. Since they expanded to 30 teams, you want to have unbalanced, because if it were 15 and 15, then an AL team and NL team would not have another team to play.

Actually, it's for days when interleague play isn't going on. If it was 15 and 15, then on days that weren't interleague play you would HAVE to give 1 NL and 1 AL team a day off. That would be a lot of off days. The way it is now, there are 8 NL games and 7 AL games.

I thought this league setup was before interleague began?

I don't know, I looked it up and it was for interleague and to give unbalanced schedules against the division.

Well in 1997-ish (I think that was around the time interleague play began), the Diamondbacks and Rays did not exist at the time, so there were 28 teams. And if I recall correctly, the Milwaukee Brewers were in the American League, so both leagues evenly had 14 teams.

If you had an odd numbers of teams in a league, it would be impossible to have every team play a game on the same day.

If each league had 15 teams you would have to have 1 interleague series at all times, which would ultimately make interleague play as it is right now pointless. Before the Marlins and Rockies joined the NL in 1993 there were 26 teams, 14 in the AL and only 12 in the NL so it's not unusual for one league to have more teams than the other.

Then contract one team from the AL, one team from the NL, and then move one NL team to the AL.

Then you would have 14 and 14. Or if you must, add two teams to the AL - one in Las Vegas, one in another market.
