Angels acquire left-hander Kazmir from Rays

Sounds like a deal is close.

ANAHEIM -- The Angels are on the verge of bolstering their beleaguered rotation for the stretch run by trading for left-hander Scott Kazmir from the Rays for a pair of prospects, a club source told MLB.com.
The Rays will get pitcher Alexander Torres and third baseman Matthew Sweeney in return in the deal, which is expected to be announced later today.
Kazmir is 8-7 this season with a 5.92 ERA in 20 starts for the Rays.

Kazmir's star has really fallen. I watched the game against Toronto and while he was dominant at times he was mostly laboring out there. I think his style runs counter to what he can actually physically do. Hopefully the Angels pitching coach can do something to minimize the number of pitches Kazmir throws.

Kazmir will eventually need elbow surgery but nonetheless he still has a lot of talent. I think the reward is greater than the risk for the Angels - but I doubt it will "bolster" their lineup as the article states.

Agreed. If the playoffs started today Kazmir would not even be in the Angels playoff rotation. This team needs help in the bullpen, badly, so they go and get a starting pitcher instead. One more reason why the Angels will be knocked out in the first round.

On MLB Network Greg Amsinger said that the Rays will officially confirm and announce the Scott Kazmir deal after their game vs. the Tigers.

And the Rays lose another pitcher. Edwin Jackson, now Kazmir. Their rotation would have been sick if they could have held everyone. Garza/Shields/Kazmir/Jackson/Sonnanstine/Price...DAMN

I guess it helps that the Angels included a third player (even if it is a player to be named later).

Kazmir a few years ago, I'd agree with this. At this point, I'm fairly certain that the Rays could find a career AAAA pitcher who could do what Kazmir is doing this year.

A lot of big names making it through waivers this year and onto the post deadline trading block.

You've got the think the economy makes it harder to live with a Kazmir or Rios contract if you're a smaller market team.

This may end up benefitting both teams.

The team this really benefits is the Red Sox. For whatever reason Kazmir owns them so it's nice to see him out of the division so thy won't have to face him 5 or 6 times anymore.

is that based on any mechanical analysis or just the fact he's a small strikeout pitcher with an injury history?

wouldn't be surprised if there is something in his delivery putting him at risk, i think his injury this year was his leg, being a pitcher who relies heavily on his slider and has injured his elbow before, i'm sure he definitely has an elevated risk factor, but i just think people jump to so many conclusions about who will need tommy john surgery based off nothing more than a gut feeling.

There is a belief that small pitchers injure faster or more likely than taller pitchers.

I'm not sure if I ever saw proof of such a thing. Off glance, it appears that it's the same as the left hander that doesn't throw hard phenomena.

There are less left handed pitchers in baseball so that would mean that there are less left handers that throw mid-90's or higher. It doesn't mean that lefties can't throw hard. Also, everyone knows that a left handed thrower is more likely to be made into a pitcher as a younger player simply because he is lefthanded, thus opening the possibility that guys that don't throw as hard are left handed pitchers. It doesn't mean that lefties can't throw hard.

So, smaller pitchers make up less of the talent pool as pitchers. When there are less of something, their injuries appear more alarming because the percentage is being weighted against the number of taller pitchers in baseball. It doesn't mean that smaller players break down faster. They just appear to because there are less of them.

That's my uneducated (as in no study done) belief on that subject.
