    Pirates enter record books

17 consecutive losing seasons. Not just the longest in MLB history. The most in NHL, NFL & NBA history as well.

Its bad when you set a mark in futility that the Bengals, Clippers, Lions & Royals can only dream of reaching.

    That's pretty damn depressing.

It's hard to think this was the same franchise that was a perennial contender in the early '90s.

On the bright side, things are looking better for the future. They made some really smart deals at the deadline.

For some odd reason I want to now start a Pirates franchise in MLB2K9 and try and right the ship.

Seriously though w/ McCutchen coming along they seem to have a rising star, and they've acquired and produced some decent arms (Maholm, Morton, Dumatrait, and Ohlendorf).

Pittsburgh is on the rise, but I still don't know if it means a winning season or not.

They are always "on the rise". As soon as they get their feet wet, they trade them. Pirates were hovering just below .500 when they started their annual fire sale this season.

If you choose to look at it that way.

The A-Ram deal netted them nothing. For Bay they got a couple bats in Moss and LaRoche and an arm.

LaRoche, in his first full yr, has had a decent going. His numbers pre ASB are ok, but he obviously has struggled since.

The McLouth deal netted them some solid players. Charlie Morton is a good arm, and Gorkys Hernandez still projects as a good prospect.

Regardless of moving Sanchez, McLouth, LaRoche, and Wilson they weren't going to do anything otherwise. Playing for just a winning season, shouldering horrible contracts like LaRoche's or Wilson's, is not justifiable if your team plan is to build for the future.

The payroll of those 4 alone absorb most, if not all, of their leverage to bring in someone who can actually contribute.

They've still got Pedro Alvarez down on the farm, and a slew of other prospects which coupled w/ McCutchen could provide an added punch in the lineup for next year. The pitching should be that much better too w/ Maholm, Ohlendorf, and Duke w/ an added year under their belt.

Might as well chalk it up as 18 straight losing seasons because the Pirates are going to win next year. I won't say 19 because I am REALLY hoping things will start to turn around then. We'll see... I'm not as high as some people on the current Pirates GM/President, but time will tell.

I do think new ownership is necessary for this team to sustain any sort of competition. If things turn around and these prospects pan out, the Pirates are going to have to pay them at some point. I just don't see Bob Nutting doing that...

Unfortunately that is the deal the Pirates upper management came to realize. Try to be mediocre and go for a winning season by patching up, or try to set up the team now to be better a couple of years down the line with the realization that you are going to have losing seasons until then.

PNC Park is about the only good thing about the Pirates these days. It just keeps getting more and more difficult to have any optimism about the Pirates future since there is always such a rapid turnover of their lineup and all they do is lose.

They could've used an Andy MacPhail-like guy to right the ship. The Pirates and Orioles were in the same spot 3 years ago, but Andy has made excellent moves whereas Huntington has not.

                        Re: Pirates enter record books

I think some people are too quick to bury Huntington. Pirates fans haven't understood that the players being traded away were either close to free agency or not that great to begin with.

Look at the guys traded this year. They feel like management gave up, but the fans are thinking with their hearts rather than their brains. Just because you like a guy doesn't mean he is talented enough to help right the ship.

Huntington is doing the right thing. This is a franchise that has lost for 17 years in a row. Why keep the players that were a part of that losing? Instead, you rebuild with new talent.

And anyone that says the Pirates have been rebuilding for years should know that it's not true. They tried patching up holes for years and it failed. This is the first time in a long time (if not ever) that they've given the keys to a guy that realizes that a full rebuild is in order. It's going to take a while, but success can be had with patience.

The Brooklyn Dodgers went through a very similar run of ineptitude for 30+ years in the first part of the 20th century yet people still came out to see "Dem Bums". That's how they got that nickname, in the '20s they were called the Daffiness Boys because of their horrid and often comedic fielding.

At least for the Pirates they generally have capable guys on the field but as soon as their young kids prove themselves they end up getting sold off.
