Great feature on the Tigers and Detroit

There is a feature article posted in SI about the Tigers and the city of Detroit. It's an outstanding story that's well worth reading.

Tigers' pennant chase offers hope in Detroit

It annoys me though that the national media wants to make it seem like the city of Detroit is the only place where people are struggling though in the state of Michigan. If anything the surrounding cities/areas around Detroit is where alot of the jobs have been lost. Alot of the people showing up at Tiger games are from surrounding cities/areas not the city itself as well.

To be honest the city of Detroit has been in terrible shape for a long time, well before the economic problems in Michigan occurred.

Sports provide hope/a distraction for the whole state not just for the city of Detroit.

Phenomenal article, I got my subscription the other day and read this piece. I have alot of respect for Detroit after reading that.

I thought the article tried to say that but it didn't try hard enough. It mentioned how areas around the ballpark and the theater appear healthy, but once you step away from the glamor, you can see that the city is struggling. I read between the lines and assumed that it must get worse as you move farther away from that circle of entertainment.

Also, it's important to note that the article is going to cover Detroit because it's basically a piece on the Tigers and it's city. The writer isn't going to touch upon the surrounding areas because they aren't the focus.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

I seem to remember basically the same article being written by Mitch Albom when Michigan State was making their run to the Final Four. Or maybe it was when the Red Wings were making their run to the Stanley Cup. We get it. Detroit is having economic problems. It's what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket and a recession hits.

Wish they would amend the article with the new Cabrera development and his "devotion" to bringing that home for the fans.
