To be eligible for a team’s playoff roster a player must be on either a)the 25 man active roster, b)the disabled list, c)the bereavement list, d)the suspended list as of August 31st at midnight.

Yeah, I knew those rules, but how can they drop Khalil Greene? That's the part I don't understand.

What do you mean? They can drop whoever they want.

The August 31st rule is only for the eligible group of guys you can choose to be the roster. Then once it's playoff time the team has to choose an actual roster for each series.

Say the Rockies had 35 guys who fit into one of those categories on August 31st. Come tomorrow (Or today maybe, I don't really know), they'd choose 25 players from those 35 to be on their roster for the division series. Once that is set, they can't use the other 10 players. If they advanced to the NLCS, they can choose a new 25 man roster. I know there are some other rules with regards to injuries, but I don't know those specifics.

That's how I understand it anyways. Given that the Royals haven't made the playoffs since I was 4, I've never paid much attention so I could be wrong.
