The impact of weather on the game
Today I was talking to my Dad, and we were talking baseball. While we were talking, somehow a discussion came up between us about how the weather become's an issue in the World Series. My Dad made a strong statement saying; "I will not watch one game in the World Series if they play in cold weather and snow like the Phillies and Rays did last year, It's not what baseball was meant to be played in". My question is for my fellow OSer's; How do you feel about the game of baseball bein played in cold temperatures and snow and bad weather, Does it bother you? My person take on it is "Well it's part of the game". But I'd like to hear feed back from ya'll on this subject.

Re: The impact of weather on the game
I guess your father doesn't watch the first month of the season then because it's pretty similar weather conditions then.
It's a part of the game and to me, there's a charm and mystique about a game having some inclement weather once in a while.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The impact of weather on the game
As long as the game isn't being played in a blizzard or extremely frigid temperatures, I don't mind it at all. Besides, pitchers favor the cooler air anyway as their breaking pitches will have more bite to them than it would have in warmer air. Plus it's tougher to hit balls out the park traveling through the cooler and more dense air.

Re: The impact of weather on the game
I despise cold, overcast, or rainy weather when watching or playing baseball, even on video games. I understand it's a part of nature, but it's not a part of baseball. If it were, we would play in it despite the nastiest of conditions (lightning is another issue entirely).
With that being said, I hate it just as much when games (especially my own) are canceled due to weather and I tend to blame it on the umpire, so whenever I umpire a game I basically leave it up to the coaches when they feel the game should be called because I don't like being in that position of being blamed for it.
Then there's the other thing where football fans that don't understand baseball clamor about how our sport is sissified because we can't take a little bit of rain. I just sit there and in my head I say, "If only you knew...".
Basically, I've hit a crossroad with this little blockage in the sport. I don't like it, but I'd rather tolerate it than not have a game at all.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: The impact of weather on the game
But they don't play in heavy snow or rain. If the conditions truly affected players then the umps would issue a rain delay.
People are acting as if the World Series was played in heavy rain. Games were postponed. Weather is hardly an issue."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: The impact of weather on the game
I think the safety issue for the players comes into the equation more in baseball than other sports. If a 96 mph slips a little bit out of the pitcher's hand and drills a guy in the head or face, that's life threatening.
And as for playing in the cold. Man up. You're getting paid a lot of money to play a children's game. If it's snowing or raining hard, they call it and play the next day. No big deal.Comment

Re: The impact of weather on the game
The problem is a Major League Baseball's lack of a spine with the networks and not putting the integrity of the game first. These games should not be played so late, when temperatures drop consistently.
If at least a few of these games were played in the afternoon, at least on the weekend, things would be so much better. It's bad enough that no one really wants to stay up until 2 a.m. EST to watch a frigid baseball game.
Bottom line: don't start these games after 7 p.m.After more than eight years on here, I finally figured out how to edit my time zone!Comment

This only becomes a real problem in the World Series and again, even then, the game won't be played in snow or rain. It gets cold in the Autumn. No matter what time you start, it's cold. It doesn't matter if it's 40 at 2 pm or 30 at 8 pm. As for watching games late, it reminds me of a thread I created a couple of months ago:

Re: The impact of weather on the game
With these expanded playoffs, the season is pushed back more and more. I went to Game 5 of the 1987 World Series which was played ona frigid night in Busch Stadium on October 22. That same game will be played on November 1 this year.Comment
