Kenji Johjima Opts Out Of Mariners Contract

Kenji Johjima announced Monday that he's opting out of the final two seasons of his contract with the Mariners to resume his career in Japan.

According to Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune, Johjima came to an undisclosed buyout agreement with the Mariners after being told that he'd likely be a backup in 2010. Seattle will be off the hook for the final two years and $16 million on the ill-advised contract extension that Johjima received from former general manager Bill Bavasi.

Holy crap, this gives Jack Z a good 45 million for the offseason. Now if only Carlos Silva would opt out of his contract to start his career as the Michelin Man, the M's would be w/out a bad contract on the roster.

Huge break for Seattle. I can't wait to see who they give that money to next!

I'm heavily leaning towards the idea that they're resigning Beltre and Branyon and restructuring Jack Wilson's contract. And I think they sell high on Jose Lopez and either get a defensive oriented 2B or give Tui a shot. That'd give them enough money to resign Felix to big money and if the ownership opens the wallets back up to pre-2009 levels (they have the richest owner in baseball) they could go after Matt Holliday for his last big contract.

I think the first 4 are likely and the last one I'm dreaming about.

With Tuiasosopo, Bill Hall, and Jack Hanrahan all able to play third i would let Beltre walk and focus on Holliday and Felix.

Hall and Hanahan yes, I'm still waiting to see Tui play 3B coherently.

I would love it if the FO opened up the pocket books and let them use Hall and Hanahan as utility players instead of a 3B platoon.

Do you think signing another high priced RH in a lefty-friendly park like Safeco is a good idea though?

I think Holliday distributes the ball pretty well. A RH power hitter can succeed in Safeco as long as he hits the other way. Plus Holliday tends to hit monster shots. Over the past two years he's only had 11 HR's under 400'. And he's a plus fielder.

As you know, a guy like Beltre really struggles since his power alley is to Center and Left-Center.

Will an AL team want to gamble on Holliday after his Oakland performance?

I'm not saying it's the best example of future success, but my guess is that executives think of him as an NL player.

I think it depends on the market for him. Its not like he was terrible in Oakland. His "down" year in Oakland was still a 125 OPS+ for half a season and he's a positive glove who could play LF at Safeco. I see him as a 3-4 WAR player in the AL and if they could get him for 12m/season that's a good deal IMO. If the NL is going to blow up for his services, then let him go.

Also, Holliday was never happy in Oakland. The A's had no real chance of contending and he had almost no offensive support around him.

The Mariners should contend in the A.L. West next season if they get their pitching staff sorted out.

The Mariners should make sure they set aside some of that money to make sure we give Felix whatever the hell he wants.

Mike Blowers told me that Tuiasosopo will win a Gold Glove next season.
