Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

How about Larry Walker? Should absolutely get in. Forget park factors because he still had a career road .865 OPS (plus almost all players have better home splits). Combine that with great base running and arm strength and you have what should be a sure fire hall of famer IMO.

Career .400 OBP, .965 OPS, plus 230 SB to boot.

Thome is a certainty. I think walker's been discussed already

Walker should get in, but won't.

Belle is archetypal of the quality vs. quantity debate: remarkable black-ink stats, but sorely lacking in the counting stats department and has the bare minimum number of PAs required to qualify for HOF induction. I'll say no.

He's already fallen off the ballot, which is a shame.

Objectively, for me, he's in the HOF purgatory along with scores of other borderline players. Plausible cases can be made both for and against him.

This makes for an interesting baseline comparison however:

You're right. I take that statement back. "Nowhere close" is a bit harsh so my bad on that. He's got some solid career numbers, but judging by the era in which he put those numbers up I think he'll fall well short. Had he played the majority of his career in the 70s or 80s he would probably get in.

Miguel Tejada? Former MVP, elite offensive SS, although the age thing might hurt him.

He certainly wouldn't get my vote. A career OPS+ of 108 and a WAR under 50 (which comes out to roughly 3 per year) doesn't cut it for the era he played in regardless of position.

It's a big, fat no on Tejada for me. An MVP award. He was durable (played all 162 games every year from 2001-2006). 300+ HR 1300+ RBI 2400+ hits and a .285 batting average for a SS is pretty nice, except...

108 career OPS+, played in heart of steroid era with questions about his integrity. Surprisingly low career WAR of 47, even with some of that coming on defense. If you toss out his 4 years of least playing time and the WAR values that go with them (1997, 2010-present), that's 3.55 WAR/year which isn't terribly amazing.

Also, his career WAR for an SS is about 20 below the average SS in Cooperstown, and his 7-year peak and JAWS scores are well below average for a HOFer.

Bad playoff stats, pedestrian walk rate (.330-ish OBP), 128th in plate appearances but 97th in outs made, 14th all time in GIDP. BR lists his comparables by age as:

                          25. Orlando Cabrera (965)
                          26. Khalil Greene (961)
                          27. J.J. Hardy (955)
                          28. J.J. Hardy (951)
                          29. J.J. Hardy (927)
                          30. Lance Parrish (891)
                          31. Gary Carter (880)
                          32. Vern Stephens (900)
                          33. Vern Stephens (908)
                          34. Vern Stephens (918)
                          35. Ryne Sandberg (852)
                          36. Ryne Sandberg (861)
                          37. Ryne Sandberg (868)

with some of the weaker comparisons against a past-prime Sandberg.

All in all, I don't think he should/will make it.

Here's a guy I think is a very interesting case for a number of reasons. Pardon me if he's been discussed already, but the search function pulled up about 8000 posts in 300 threads with little to none of them having anything to do with him.

                            Anyway....Jeff Kent?

As a second baseman, I don't think there's much going against Jeff Kent. Unless I'm missing something, like steroid ties, which is quite possible considering who he played with (maybe they put aside their differences over some good ol' injections!) Kent's a lock.

How the hell did I forget about him? I would say, yes because of his power numbers and offensive numbers for a 2nd baseman, I don't think he was any
thing real special in the field, but I don't I think he was a terrible defender either. 377 homeruns for a 2nd baseman is impressive in it's own right, of course he played 1b too, but I believe he played enough games at second.

                                Put him in.
