Re: what could have been thread

If Tommy Lasorda hadn't sold his soul to the devil, allowing the '88 team to win the series as a huge underdog for the price of never winning the world series again.

Then again, maybe there is always next year.

      Here's a great one:

If JR Richard didn't blow out his arm and turned into a shell of his former self the Astros go to at least one WS in the '80s and perhaps even win it all.

I swear, from what i've seen of Richard and heard about him he was destined to be one of the greatest strikeout pitchers of all time. Imagine a 1986 team with Ryan, Scott and Richard. That'd have been a nearly unbeatable 3 man rotation right there.

Nothing was wrong with Richard's arm other than early signs of an impending stroke. It was the fact he had a major stroke and a massive blood clot that almost went to his brain. That's what ruined his career and almost took his life.

I thought it was an arm issue as well nonetheless the "what if" scenario is still a good one.

Sporting News article on Richard: http://www.sportingnews.com/archives...rs/172526.html

I'm not sure if he would have still been effective in '86 (he would have been 36) without the stroke, but I don't think the Phillies would have beaten the Astros in the 1980 NLCS if he would have stayed healthy.

Most of the previous posts aren't terribly tragic, more along the lines of "What if my team that had multiple All-Stars and won championships been even better??"

If you're talking franchise-changers, only three really come to mind:

                  1. What if the 1994 strike never happened? (already covered)

                  2. What if Barry Bonds had managed to throw out the slowest runner in the history of baseball? (HM to "sure-handed" Jose Lind, as well as Jim Leyland for allowing Drabek to start the 9th after throwing approximately 1000 pitches on 3 days' rest)

                  3. What if the Indians had a reliever even a tad more reliable than Joe Table?

Didn't exactly give up on him. Denny Neagle did win 20 games for the Braves, but it would have been nice to see Jason Schmidt remain a Brave. If you want to talk about trades though I would love to see Adam Wainwright still pitching for the Braves than one season of J.D. Drew in Atlanta.

What if the Braves had signed the guy who couldn't make the throw instead of Greg Maddux after the 1992 season? It almost happened according to John Schuerholz's book. Would they have been more or less successful during the remainder of the decade?

Also, in that book it talks about the Pirates offered Bonds to the Braves early in his career for SS Andres Thomas. Also, the Mets offered the Braves a package including Howard Johnson and Rick Aguilera for Dale Murphy.

Also, John Schuerholz said in his book that A-Rod wanted to sign with the Braves when he became a free agent because his idol growing up was Dale Murphy which is why he wore #3. He even met with Schuerholz in Atlanta, but according to the book the Braves didn't offer half of what the Rangers did.

If Ted Turner would have still owned the Braves and Schuerholz could have gotten along with Scott Boras who knows what might have happened?

If Atlanta actually had a lockdown closer in the 90's.

What if the Orioles had given Mussina run support in Game 6 of the '97 ALCS instead of letting Armando ****ing Benitez get his dirty hands on the game?

What if Jeffrey Maier kept his idiotic self seated while Tarasco made a routine catch?

What if Mark Teixiera wasn't a traitor?

What if the Orioles drafted Tim Lincecum over Bill Rowell in '06?

What if the Orioles were good?
