Jayson Starks Team of the Decade

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playof...son&id=4599154

He ranks the team of the decade, and has two rankings depending on who wins. If Philly wins: Red Sox, Phils, Yanks, Cards, Angels. If the NY wins: Yanks, Sox, Cards, Angels, Philly.

Even if NY wins, I would still rate the Sox ahead of them because of the historical aspect of their World Series win. And this comes from a guy who roots for the Yankees when they play the Red Sox, obviously I hate the Yankees right now as the Phils are my home team. But I don't think that hate is the reason I would rank the Sox ahead right now, I just take history more into considiration.

The Yankees would have more wins, more World Series appearances, and the same number of championships as the Red Sox if they won.

Not to mention, Boston has missed the playoffs 4 times this decade.

It doesn't help that they've won 7 fewer division titles in that span either.

I understand that the Yankees have been far more dominant than the Sox in this decade. It's just that when I think back on this decade, all that comes to mind is the Sox winning it and the fact that they did it after coming back from 0-3.

          That's not exactly dominance...

Analyzing just by statistics, the Yankees are the clear team of the decade. Based on 2004 though, I'd vote Red Sox.

It's gotta be the Pirates. To be this bad for that long is mind-boggling.

It is an intersting question. The Yanks clearly have the numbers.

But do expectations fit into the equation? If before 2000, Yankee fans were told that their team would only win 2 titles in the next 10 years, would they be satisfied that the team met expectations?? (and we won't bother telling them that they will become the first mlb team to blow a 3-0 series lead...against their hated rival). If the answer is no, can be they be considered the team of the decade if they didn't meet expectations??

Meh, Yankees are the team of the century and just about every decade. I think I would vote for another team just for a change. They'll probably win 8 of the next 10 anyways. Classy team. But I still hate them.

Re: Jayson Starks Team of the Decade

I think anyone saying a team other than the Yankees is looking at their very brief (I'm sure it was eternity for some...lol) absence from being the premier presence in the league and the unrealistic expectations tied to the organization. From 2000-2004, they were in 4 ALCS and 3 World series' while winning a championship. Then they "struggled;" not getting past the division series until this year, even missing the playoffs last year. Then, obviously they won it all this year.

Even during the peak of the Red Sox greatness during the last half of the decade, they missed the playoffs one year and were swept out of the ALDS twice. Not to mention the fact that my boys didn't even make the playoffs for the first three years of the decade. Obviously they finished pretty strong appearing in 4 ALCS' since 03 and winning the two titles. It's hard to ignore shaking off the 86 years of ineptitude, but I don't think it should weigh in at all in this discussion, personally.

So with the Yankees, we are talking early decade dominance, a slight drop-off in the middle that was still very good, and a championship finish. Plus, as I mentioned, they only missed the playoffs once even during their so-called "slump."

I agree with Stark's premise that if the Phillies would have won, the Red Sox should get it based primarily on championships and being the overall more dominant team during the last half of the decade. Even then it would have been close though IMO. With the Yankees winning, it's a no-brainer.

Nothing to hang our heads about in the 2000s, but once again we are looking up at the Yankees in the big picture, I'm afraid.

I'm still of the opinion that being "team of the decade" plus a buck still won't buy you a seat on the subway.
