What is wrong with baseball players??

Why are so many guys turning down the offer to be in the HR derby? And why are there so many guys not playing in the actual game? I just heard that now Manny Ramirez won't be playing...why not?? A sore hamstring...c'mon, that's a pretty lousy excuse IMO.

Is anyone else noticing this year that it seems like the All-Star game and it's festivities seem a little different that most years? I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the game actually counts???

last year there were only a couple of players voted to start actually started at least that was the case for the NL team.

Manny Ramirez - I'd guess he was told not to play with his sore hamstring. Think about it... You're Boston and you're paying him boatloads of money. You want him to rest to get his hamstring better so it's not sore/strained when he comes back to play. In no way do they want him to play and start the second half of the season in the same shape he's in now. The All Star game isn't that important. I'm sure he'd play if it were the postseason, but honestly, it's meaningless. So Manny's doing the smart thing (and correct thing IMO).

The HR derby's pointless. Many guys won't do it for fear of injury (back mostly) and for fear of messing up their swings. A HR derby can really screw up a guys stroke.

I just don't think many players are that interested in the All Star game anymore. A lot of players would rather spend these 3 days to rest and be with their family, who they are away from during most of the year. I don't blame them. It's more important to be ready and rested for the second half of the season than to play in the All Star game...

I agree wholeheartedly. If a player is not at 100%, it is his responsibility to his team's fans to rest. In the case of Manny, the BoSox are only 1 game back, and I'm sure the Red Sox fans would rather see him healthy and make a run at the Yankees, then see him hobble around in left field on Tuesday night. He'll still be there to get his name introduced, won't he?

It'd be a pretty good excuse if you were Red Sox management.

What is happening to the HR Derby is similar to what is happening to the Slam Dunk competetion in the NBA. Not many stars wan't to do it. Don't want to risk an injury or something.
