Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran underwent an arthroscopic clean-out of the arthritic area of his knee, the club announced on Wednesday.
Beltran elected to have the surgery after experiencing a worsening of osteoarthritis of the right knee during the offseason. The club said Beltran didn't have any pain following the end of the season and into the early offseason, but symptoms returned and it became too painful to continue his conditioning to get ready for Spring Training.
Beltran's personal physician, Dr. Richard Steadman, performed the surgery on Wednesday in Colorado.
The five-time All-Star is expected to resume baseball activity in 12 weeks, which means Beltran is expected to miss the beginning of the regular season with Opening Day set for April 5 at Citi Field.
Beltran played in just 81 games last season, batting .325 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs. The 12-year veteran is a career .283 hitter with 273 home runs, 286 stolen bases and 1,035 RBIs in 1,562 games.
