I just read the funniest thing...re: Bob Uecker

I'm reading the book "October 1964" which is an account mostly of the Cards and Yankees seasons. And Bob Uecker is cracking me up....

Before Game 1 of the World Series, Bob shagged balls in the outfield with a Tuba....

He was commish of the Uecker League, a game played with pitchers taking batting practice. Bob Gibson was league champ.

Before the season, while the team was set for the team picture...Uecker was seated besides Bob Gibson and whispered something to him right before the picture was taken. A while later, Cards management had the picture retaken because Gibson and Uecker were holding hands with big goofy smiles on their faces.

    But the best.....

Bob developed a card game he played called "Ugly". Turns out Uecker had friends in the Philadelphia police department, and whenever a particularly grim-looking man or women would get their mug shot taken, Bob got a copy of it and placed it into his deck. When he got 52 cards, he invented Ugly...which was played like Hearts. 4 people each laid down a card and the ugliest card played won the other 3.

A truly funny guy, I'm gonna have to look for his autobiography.

Hahahaha...that made me laugh pretty hard. Sounds like a good book.

I just got done reading The Boys of Summer and am looking for another baseball book. Might have to check this one out.

Yeah, if you haven't read Ball Four, then you haven't read THE baseball book, IMO.

Definitely..I also really enjoyed Mike Shropshire's books as well. Especially "Seasons in Hell". It is a well written book about the 73-75 Rangers. It's got some really good Billy Martin and Whitey Herzog stories, and is just as raucous as Ball Four.
