This is pretty much a thread just to gauge where our minds are at right now. Say you are he owner of an expansion team, and you get to pick from a pool of players. What position do you want your star at? Pretty much, what position would you want to build a franchise around? Assume all players are equal in talent relevant to their positions (ex. C and 1B equally good, different skillsets)

What position do you want your franchise player to play?
Hello all OSers,
This is pretty much a thread just to gauge where our minds are at right now. Say you are he owner of an expansion team, and you get to pick from a pool of players. What position do you want your star at? Pretty much, what position would you want to build a franchise around? Assume all players are equal in talent relevant to their positions (ex. I'd choose an everyday player to be my franchise player. That person today would be Chase Utley so I voted 2B.Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing. -
Re: What position do you want your franchise player to play?
In a perfect world i'd want a catcher who can call a good game and have some pop in his bat (15ish HRs) and who can be a leader in the clubhouse.
Realistically speaking i'd build an expansion team around Aaron Hill (yes i'm biased)Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What position do you want your franchise player to play?
I went with centerfield... Because they are the most important defensive outfielder... A great CF will cover flaws of either corner OF. Not only that, but they are generally the table setters for your power hitters. .290/.370 with 30-40SB and maybe 15-25HR out of a great CF with an arm, that's a franchise player.Comment

CF, to be specific Carlos Beltran because he can hit for power, steal bases, and cover the fieldComment

Re: What position do you want your franchise player to play?
Roberto Clemente and Vladimir Guerrero are probably my two favorite players of all time and they both played right field. I guess I'm a big fan of outfield assists and those guys both had plenty of those.Comment

Having seen C.C. Sabathia literally will the Brewers into the Playoffs a couple years ago, I chose SP.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Ah okay, I see. I see what you mean. A young Vlad was one of the most exciting things I've seen in my baseball life.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Except it almost doesn't matter with an expansion team. The SP will have toiled for at LEAST 5 years before the expansion team is any good.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Not every franchise is going to go for broke like that though. I was talking more through historical patterns rather then the last round of expansion. The D-Backs almost went bankrupt thanks to that strategy.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
