Re: Nathan Likely Done for the Year

If closers were so easily replaceable Mariano Rivera wouldn't be entering his 14th season as the Yankees closer.

Teams that don't have a legitimate closer may be able to throw various pitchers out in the 9th inning and hope for the best but for a team like the Twins that have seen Nathan convert 247 out of 271 save oppertunities the past 6 years this is a huge loss.

Closers are easy to replace when they aren't the top tier of closers.

Nathan is a top closer and there's only a handful of those guys in the majors. He's not easily replaceable.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I read Twins are looking at George Sherrill. I hope they look away.

I believe I heard ESPN say Jon Rauch might be the new closer.

That won't end well... I remember when he came up with the White Sox, he was supposed to be the next big thing, and then he was BAD.

This coming from a fan of a team w/ heart attack closers such as:

              Bob Wickman
              Joe Borowski
              Jensen Lewis
              and now Kerry Wood

              ?

There's no one on the Twins to replace Nathan's 70 innings (as stated by Tim Kurkjian), and there's really only a few closers in the league w/ Nathan's pedigree. ESPN did a comparison and since '04 Nathan has been better than Mariano Rivera.

Besides, just ask a Phillies fan how easy it is to find a closer.

Yep, and the Indians should have made it to the playoffs with Wickman and made it to one game from the WS with Blowsaveski, who I'm sure I don't need to tell you, sucked.

Nathan is an elite closer and losing him will hurt, but it's not going to take them from contending to middle of the pack. Especially in the incredibly weak ALCentral

The way his fastball was hit last year says otherwise.

Liriano has something like a .920 OPS against with runners in scoring position, and a .945 OPS against with runners on base, in any position. I wouldn't want that pitching the 9th inning for my team.

I will agree with that, I was referring more to his slider than anything else. If (big if) he can find the location on the fastball like he had prior to TJS in 2006 (which he did show in winter ball), I think he's thier best option at this point. Pat Neshek is coming off surgery and Jon Rauch is more of set up guy IMO. I have a feeling it's going to be closer by committee this year for the Twins unless they go out and make a move. That being said, there really isn't a lot out there.

Oh wait...he's been our only closer? Like there wasn't Jose Mesa or Tom Gordon before him? Ricky Bottalico? Mitch effing Williams, need I mention the 1993 WS?

Brad Lidge was a problem last year, that luckily didn't prevent us from playing in another world series. However, the 2nd in line for the closer job also was iffy (Madson). So not having a strong 70 inning beast of a reliever in the back-end of your bullpen (Nathan) will severely hurt your chances at winning, much less winning to get in the playoffs.

As an aside, at least he admits to a horrible performance rather than being cocky. I actually like him as an analyst on BBTN.
