Re: Opening Week Discussion Thread: April 4 - April 11 (Week 1)

I have a question did Victor Martinez start for Boston tonight?

It doesn't really matter anyways but i'm gonna bust out a stat courtesy of Dave "Soupy" Campbell from SNB on radio. Anyways he prefaced it by saying the sample size is really small but that in the 23 games Martinez caught for Boston the collective ERA (his Catcher's ERA) was 5.4something. This is a pretty troubling stat and it seems like it should be something to take note of when you look at the Red Sox start to the season pitching wise.

Anyways I thought it's something that should be followed up on this year.

    Onto the Jays game!

    - Brian Tallet had a typical game for himself. He battled hard and gave the Jays 6+ solid innings. Don't let the 3 or 4 bad starts fool you from last year as Tallet pitched pretty darn well overall. I just hope he can keep that up until the other rotation guys get healthy again.

    - Vernon Wells is looking really good but I learned something tonight that was interesting including tonight's game Vernon Wells leads all MLB players with 80 RBI in the month of April since 2006. So while his start is impressive this year we'll have to see how he's doing 2 months from now.

    - Edwin Encarnacion is really living up to the E5 nickname. He booted a ball that while not particularly easy to field was one that he should've been able to handle, instead it was booted and allowed a run for Texas.

    - Something mildly humorous (at least to me) occurred and I hope it's shown on the highlight packages. Nelson Cruz hit a windcutter to dead center field and Vernon Wells was running down to get it but the ball just pushed itself over the fence. Wells stares at the wall, plays around with the brim of his cap as if to say "what the heck happened I thought that ball would get back onto the grass". Eh, I guess it's one of those things you have to see in order to get the humor of it.

    - Last but not least Buck Martinez has done something in two games that Jamie Campbell and Rod Black couldn't do for years and that is to make Pat Tabler actually worth listening to. Bravo Buck!

Kyle Blanks has been hanging around Troy Glaus too much.

Bah...you hate anything that isn't Sabremetrics

Though I did hear of another newfangled stat: FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching)

It's not about being sabermetric, it's about having some kind of meaningful use. I dislike ERA, but at least it has its uses (assuming you recognize its weaknesses). There hasn't been anything done (that I've found anyway) that shows catcher ERA is anything but completely worthless. Kind of like holds, basically worthless.

FIP is good, as well as its variant xFIP, both of which are readily available on Fangraphs.

I wouldn't say "holds" are worthless. It at least illustrates a certain effectiveness of a pitcher, but what it doesn't do is tell you how Hold "A" was different than Hold "B".

In other news...damn...the Dodgers showing signs of life w/ a 2-0 lead. Love that the Pirates are playing inspired ball against those ugly Dodgers.

Man, Miggy is on fire to start the season. Ordonez is resembling more of his old self as well.

I think it is safe to say all the people questioning Cabrera after last year's incident can be quiet now.

I'm ecstatic to finally see Hanson tonight.

Also: over/under on when Troy Glaus is finally dropped in the lineup --> 13 games.
