I'm going to go ahead and tell him as well as everyone here that "day-to-day" just isn't going to happen, and this might be the start of something terrible for the rest of his career. I hope that won't be the case, but let me explain myself. I can't guarantee that my injury is the same, but two years ago I suffered an identical-sounding heel injury on my left foot, tagging up from third to home. Like him, it felt worse as the day went on. If he woke up today and it felt like it was "broken", then that's the same thing that I had (which was before misdiagnosed as retrocalcaneal bursitis, but now is said it probably has to do with the bone, and it's not a fracture).
It took me ten weeks to heal (no pun intended). After that, I promise I felt pretty full-strength with it for a long time, but there were some times when I kind of felt that I knew I had injured it once before, like I felt a little lingering with it. There were times that I just wanted to be careful with it.
Well last October, the pain came back. You can read it all in this thread, but I haven't updated it since. Basically, it's been seven months now, and I'm still not any better. I haven't picked up a baseball or a bat in that long, and at the end of March I sought a podiatrist and got some more shots, was on Nabumetone for three weeks, and since then and for the next month or two, I will be wearing one of those large boots on my left leg. Yes, it's been that bad. I'm considering foot surgery, which is also very risky. I just hope that I can be back on my feet again by next fall, but there aren't any guarantees here with a heel injury.
Anyway, now you know my story, so I'm just hoping that Mauer doesn't experience the same thing. I mean seven months is an entire season for him, that's not really good for a professional ballplayer (especially one that was just given a ridiculous contract). He may even have to DH a bit when he comes back.
Best of luck to him. But again... I'm fearing the worst here.
