    I love reading about prospects...

    Claussen:

Claussen has made a quick recovery from June 2002 Tommy John surgery and would probably be in the majors right now if he played for another team. His usually strong strikeout rate is down this year, but that’s not a long-term concern, especially since International League hitters are batting just .183 off him. Claussen throws in the low-90s and has a fine slider. He should open next year in the rotation, and could have an Andy Pettitte-type career for the Yankees.

    Gobble:

    68. Jimmy Gobble - LHP Royals - Age 21 - ETA: May 2004
    Previous rankings: 2002 #62, mid-2002 #41, 2003 #61

    11-7, 3.52 ERA, 117 H, 89/37 K/BB in 117 2/3 IP for Double-A Wichita

Gobble, who missed half of last season with groin and shoulder problems, hasn't taken much of a step forward as a Double-A repeater. It's rather surprising how slowly the Royals are pushing him -- prior to last year I would have guessed that he would be in the majors by now -- but they seem to be waiting for him to dominate Southern League competition before moving him up to Triple-A Omaha. Gobble has the arsenal to be a successful starter in the big leagues. He throws in the low-90s and has a plus curveball. He still needs to improve his change. If he can stay healthy, he should turn into a solid No. 3 starter.
